Stop Homeschooling, Support Public Schools, Christian Educator Advises

A controversial high-profile Christian educator denounced the homeschooling trend of believers withdrawing from the public, and encouraged them instead to pursue excellence and engage the culture in all levels of education.

"When I read that there's been a 3,000 percent increase in homeschooling in America, it tells me that we're stepping out of our educational system," Carlos Campo, an education and leadership consultant, told The Christian Post in an interview this week. Calling for a renewed emphasis on excellence in Christian education, Campo also encourages believers to engage the public schools.

"As Christians, we are about cultural engagement," Campo declared. "God has given us an opportunity to engage the culture in every regard." He argued that instead of pulling their children out of public school and into homeschooling, Christian parents should be more engaged and active in their ...

Apparently Dr. Campo homeschooled his own children. Wonder how that influenced this position?

People are free to choose. Anyone that wants state school, should get state school. For me, this is not the one issue that marks a Christian from non Christian. But it is a topic of discussion here. If any aspect of a Christians life and conduct is important, all aspects are.

State schools are not a neutral place to learn. The corriculum is driven by God haters. The environment is steeped in the paganism and occultism that is marketed to the world.

As the resouces, network, and the support systems for homeschooling grows, it will address the weak areas and empower more people join in. This is the right direction.

Campos is advocating moving in the other direction. Danial is not a good example. Danial was taken captive to Babylonia.
If Campos is looking to draw lessons from the bible, he should look at Lot.

When given a choice, Lot looked over and saw fertile land and a city brimming with opportunity and potential. That city was Soddom & Gamorah. Lot went and dwelt among them.

Not at the cost of our children! We can not expect children to defend themselves from an ediucational system that is determined to eliminate any biblical values from its teaching and introduce damming and harmful influences . Sorry but this guy is totally wrong. You are your child advocate .

Any of you here, hear of Geo. M. Marsden? e.g., The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship, while this on Amazon, this is on the IHCC website,
Description wrote:
Fundamentalism and American Culture has long been considered a classic in religious history, and to this day remains unsurpassed. Now available in a new edition, this highly regarded analysis takes us through the full history of the origin and direction of one of America's most influential religious movements. A major new chapter compares fundamentalism since the 1970s to the fundamentalism of the 1920s, looking particularly at the extraordinary growth in political emphasis and power of the more recent movement. Never has it been more important to understand the history of fundamentalism in our rapidly polarizing nation.

with common core, I'm hearing that even the educators on panels are not actually choosing the curriculum or forming it.

we are not just talking spiritually and morally depleted, but academically... which makes sense, if you take the truth of our existence and our calling to live rightly away from curriculum, you do not actually end up with science, but rather a strong arm ruling over chaos.

we are creating a society that will not be able to function on its own and will be ruled, a non thinking, non caring, self centered society.

the good news is that as man's ways fail, the door may be opened for the gospel to be heard and delivered by a purified church.

CV,
I see your point concerning cohabitation. I certainly believe it is the parents prerogative to send their child to school or home school them based on their assessment of the child's spiritual maturity. I think we are just looking at the same mountain from different perspectives. Enjoy the discussion.

World Zionist Organization establishes council to promote Hebrew language for diaspora Jews and how different is ancient Hebrew from modern Hebrew? I saw this interesting idea I'm having Hebrew taught public schools. I also included a different article which tells the difference between ancient & modern Hebrew which is also interesting, there isn't that much as compared to New Testament Greek and modern Greek. So it might be harder to get away with teaching New Testament Greek in public schools. The religious thing of course.

Penny, I think you have a good point. No doubt a lot of our church leaders have brought their foolish indoctrinated beliefs into the church. Also, like SteveR mentioned earlier, a lot of parants just drop their kids off at church, never taking the time to nurture their own kids spiritual upbringing. 40 hrs a week of secular influence is not going be undone by 2 hrs of church influence, especially considering that a lot of the youth ministries are seeker sensitive, entertainment focused, and watered down.

Why should we disobey the Biblical command of Dueteronomy to teach our children in a Godly environment just to send our children to the unGodly for training? This is most foolish advice! If you're unable to properly educate your children at home, delegate that leadership to a Godly Christian school, but never to an unGodly education system.

1517, we have a nation of easy believism because they were indoctrinated in it in public schools, don't understand basic forms of gov, economy, history, let alone basic reading and writing and arithmetic... we definitely reflect the greater culture. we are reaping what we sow.

train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

We have all those problems CV, because that is what mankind is, and the majority of them, aren't Christian, and that is true of the United States throughout it's history. I would have almost thought that the author of the article was Fuller Seminary graduate. (I wish the class lectures and pdf's we had on this outfit and others were up on the Indian Hills Community Church website, but it isn't. You can see a severe, but still good condensation of some of what Don Goertzen taught on the second page (PDF) of my church's newsletter A Rock Too Heavy -- Don Goertzen. I think you'll find the article interesting.

Carlos Campo formerly of the infamous Regent University for example brought up this book, and if you read the description The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind who was at least a speaker at Fuller and fellow traveler of it.

Christians are to have a Christian Worldview which will conflict many times with the Secular one but Christians aren't to be braindead! Come, Let Us Reason

CV,
By our discussing Christians pulling their children from the wicked public school system proves the church has abdicated. In our country's history, you will find that the standard for education was the New England Primer which taught the sciences (math, history, natural science, etc..) from the biblical perspective. The problem is not the conspicuous wicked world, with its version of education, but the very fact that the American church has forsaken her first love, watered down the scripture, and has professing members that remain on spiritual milk, have more fear of the "Canaanites" than for the very God they profess to trust. Ok then
now that they are solidly equiped, let them watch TV unfetered. See what I mean? We do fear the bogeyman, rightly

In a very real sense, Campo and all Americans already are engaging society. Where it's not safe, we protect ourselves and our children! We don't call that abdicating!

I will concede there are those who are providentially hindered from taking their young ones out of public school. (some are selfishly hindered)

The Bible says learn not the way of the heathen, It says blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly. I have seen too many young people ruined at the hand of public school, the ones who stand strong in their faith are far fewer in number. God is capable of giving grace to cause them to stand, don't get me wrong, but just like we avoid, pass not by,and turn from temptation, we should guard our children from a system of humanism, homosexuality, hedonism, alcoholism, drugs, atheism, etc. that they would pick up in public schools through curriculum and peers. The Bible says guard not abandon your heart.

I have seen people who speak of the evils of television and how we should guard against it and yet send their young people to public education, it makes me scratch my head and wonder.

We are not perfect, we don't live in a perfect society, so you will find errors and problems no matter which way you go. I personally am thankful my son had 18 years of Christian education and see a huge difference in his cousins who had none. All glory to God.

SF,
My point was not that parents are to send out children to do battle or evangelize the public school system, though our God can equip anyone if its His will. My focus is on the parents instilling the solid rock faith that is courageous because of the object of that faith, Jesus Christ. Besides, where do you get the idea that children cannot disciple? Anyway, Mr. Campo was saying that if our children are taught to use the mind that God has given, founded on the immovable faith on Christ, we as Christians can give an answer and should not fear the bogeyman of public education. Parents are responsible to ensure their child is equipped. I think of the Old Testament when the Hebrews spied out the land. Most were scared because the inhabitants were big physically and ominous. But, Caleb and Joshua rent their clothes because of the people's lack of faith. God is our commander, the battle is His. We are to be faithful warriors, children and adults.
