Evangelical visits to BYU signal a new evangelical-Mormon detente
Last month, after being sure to get his caffeine fix at Starbucks, Southern Baptist leader Richard Land went where few evangelicals had dared to go before: the campus of Brigham Young University, the intellectual heart of Mormonism.
After lecturing on âfamily, faith, freedom and America,â Land attended a BYU football game with Mormon leaders and joined them to hear James Taylor sing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Days later, George O. Wood, the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, also visited BYU, followed by the Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptistsâ flagship seminary.
Is there a new detente â perhaps more practical than theological â between evangelicals and Mormons?...
Penny, now that I got used to the change, I like your new handle...sounds much more feminine than the latter. I know you struggled for a while though. I was like, "come on, pick one already". I'm glad I didn't suggest Bernice or Gladys. Uh oh, now all the Bernices and Gladys' are going to rain down on me. Now, off to my GMO, and sugar laden breakfast...mmm. Nothing like manmade food and preservatives topped off with a nice tall glass of city tap water. So much better than all of that awful garden grown and free range stuff. I will eat blueberries sometimes though, but only if I know they have been treated with pesticides, otherwise, no way! These health nuts have it all backwards. Natural=bad, manmade, chemical based, preservative laden, perticide protected=good. If the government does it, then it is what's best for us.
@Neil.....true. Same experience in the local social clubs as you.Total sellouts to sloppy agape..ecumenism and the feel good mushy gospel. Better to be at home with a few faithful disciples and your Bible. The Lord Jesus Christ said it was a small flock!
No news here folks, move along. You'll not go wrong assuming that all âevangelicalâ leaders are sellouts until proven otherwise. Their purpose is clear to me: allies at any price to fight their losing cultural/political battles, which has preeminence over what they consider tertiary matters like sound doctrine.
If I come across as cynical, it's only because I've been in churches too long & seen how practically atheistic they really are. Join the police or fire dept. if you want someone to âhave your back,â for you won't find many such people in churches.
I would discount the notion that this is part of some last days NWO religion, as these groups are being driven together because of the worlds disdain of their social values. I do agree with Penny that shared flaws in eschatology are partly responsible for these meetings notably the Assemblies of God delegation. While I wouldnt participate in these meetings, I can pray that our Evangelical brothers can share the Gospel with these lost Mormons.
btw: When Mormons come to your door, take control of the converstion. Immediately exhort them on the Deity of Christ, and show them using the Scripture that Christ is NOT a created being. While this can be done with a vareity of Scripture, I find using the Book of Hebrews the best retort for their error
....well one can see this alliance a mile away, theologies born out of same era and Zionist in nature, many will see these political alliances as necessary, after all, will Jesus return for His "secret" "pretrib" rapture if Americans are not being faithful to their foreign adventures that lead to the persecution of Christians?
