Rise Of Cattle Rustlers Contributing To Increase In Beef Prices

A crime reminiscent of the Wild West is hitting consumers in their wallets as cattle rustling is on the rise.

Justin Oldfield—a central valley rancher who also represents the California Cattlemen’s Association—says rustlers are drawn to the $1,500 a head of cattle could catch.

He says ranchers are losing tens of thousands of dollars a year to cattle crimes similar to copper thefts.

“What’s problematic is they get about 100 percent of the profit when they sell the animal,” Oldfield said.

Thats all part of the reason we left California
It's not just cattle theft that's happening to that once beautiful state
the list goes on
I feel sorry for the folks who would like to leave but are stuck because of economic conditions but would encourage my brothers in Christ to flee if you can

Ah, GS, why haven't we heard of cattle theft in Texas, being a conservative state do they give them "tree" justice so we don't hear about it? :-7

In any event, it isn't unheard of in Nebraska, which is a very big cattle state "With 6.7 million head of cattle and calves in 2007, Nebraska has the second largest beef cattle herd in the nation." except Nebraska’s Cattle Feeding Industry: Size, Structure and Related Industries (PDF)-- Anyway, Neb. man pleads guilty to trying to steal cattle.

As I recall Eastwood didn't portray rural lawmen, at least not in those Spaghetti Westerns that made him famous.

Now Jack Hays & "Rip" Ford were the definitive Western lawmen, as any Texan ought to know (both were Texas Rangers). And there's Wyatt Earp; did you know that in the 1920s, he met John Wayne? Wayne based his movie characterizations on Earp! Bat Masterson described Earp as “absolutely destitute of physical fear.” He wasn't afraid of changing careers, either.

History beats fiction.

Maybe the cattlemen shoud hire Clint Eastwood to put a stop to these cattle rustlers, though he may not be as fast on the draw as he used to be
