Report: Church Giving Reaches Depression-Era Record Lows

Collection plates are growing even lighter as Protestant church member giving reached new lows in 2011, and tithing probably will not recover from the recession, according to a new report by Empty Tomb, a Christian research group.

“Is the issue that the church is not providing an authentic alternative to the consumer mindset?” said Sylvia Ronsvalle, executive vice president of Empty Tomb. “Over a period of time, if the church isn’t providing more of an authentic alternative, the church will lose.”

The percentage of a church member’s income given to the church dropped to 2.3 percent in 2011 (the latest year for which numbers are available), down from 2.4 percent in 2010, according to the Empty Tomb study.

In 1968, church members gave an average of 3.1 percent of their income. ...

Those luxuriant megachurch campuses (imitating Rome) suggests to me that many churches have too much money. Compare with the NT church, which seemed pretty low overhead; they collected funds for needy brethren in Jerusalem, a handful of worthy local widows, & remunerating Bible teachers for their time. Anything else, I infer, is up to individual believers to fund.

You won't hear this from many pastors, though, just as you won't hear about how to discipline erring leaders. Conflict of Interest?

At my Church, we found people will give if they can understand the need. Which leads to two obstacles
1) Communication of needs: Many members spend only 90 minutes/wk, 3 weeks a months at Church. With a primary purpose of worship, financial need is overlooked especially as the government has taken over so many areas(like schooling) from Churches. Often, they receive their annual guideline then pledge a comfortable amount
2) Competition from other charities: Its almost the norm for members to give as much or even more to other charities than their own Church.
