Pastor Drinks Beer in the Name of Jesus at Bar-Based Bible Study

In between a sip or two of beer, a group of men delved deeper into the Bible at a bar off Route 67 in Oxford, Conn. last week, the Associated Press reports. The story goes on to paint a picture of men digging deeper for a better understanding of themselves and a better relationship with God.

Is that biblical? The Rev. John Donnelly of Christ Church Quaker Farms thinks so. The way he sees it, a lot of men won’t go to Bible study in church—but they might be willing to listen to Jesus with a cold brewsky in hand.

That’s why he launched a group called Beer, Bible and Brotherhood. The first meeting drew 10 men who downed beer while contemplating Bible verses, the AP reports. He's hoping to build the group of suds-sipping seekers to 50. ...

•"Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to him whose life is bitter, 7 Let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his trouble no more." (Prov. 31:6-7).
•"He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the labor of man, so that he may bring forth food from the earth, 15 And wine which makes man’s heart glad, so that he may make his face glisten with oil, and food which sustains man’s heart," (Psalm 104:14-15).
We can see that there is a proper use of alcohol. We could categorize this use as medicinal. The ancients did not have the medicines like we have today. So, alcohol was used as a kind of curative. Consider this verse...
•"No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments," (1 Tim. 5:23).
Yes, it is permissible for Christians to drink alcohol. It is not a sin to have a drink. But, in saying this, we have to be careful not to encourage the misuse of alcohol upon ourselves or by using it to cause others to stumble. We have freedom in Christ (Gal. 5:1) and all things are lawful (1 Cor. 6:12). But again, we are not to use our freedom to sin or to cause others to stumble.

"He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray." (Proverbs 5:23)

Use self-discipline and moderation; not twisted scripture. John Jones, if you cannot see that your selected verse pertains to being drunk, of course you should abstain from any and all fruit of the vine. It's ok if it is a weakness for you; others around you should abstain and drink wholly unto the Lord when they do partake. But don't twist scripture into eating and drinking along agenda lines, please.

Prov. 20:1 - Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

So many would give anything if thou shall not drink alcohol were added as the 11th commandment,we are warned against its abuse but not prohibited from its use.Alcohol is no more of a problem outside of its boundries than sex is yet look at all the excuses made for Homosexuality,Divorce and cohabitation.....i recently watched a pracher so fat he could hardly walk waddle back and forth across a stage yelling at the top of his voice about self control. The fact is food is booze of most of the church today.

Did I read this story wrong or is this guy just having a bible STUDY in a pub? What's the big deal? If you don't want to drink, make your own groups: Water, the Word and Women or something. More people are addicted to caffine so we should not have bible studies in coffee shops lest we cause someone to stumble (and I mean that as tongue in cheek as I can). It smacks typical of the tee totalers to condem people and not the sin - with no Biblical reason to deny those who partake of the blessings of the fruit of the vine. Jesus's first miracle was to make absolutely fabulous fermented drink. Too many on this board would condem His actions as spurring on drunkeness! You miss the blessing! How sad!
very confused how a verse that says give could be mistaken for one that reads abstain

When the Son of man shall come shall He find faith on earth? All these are pointing to pollution and decadence that are signalling the coming judgement of God on the world. While indeed we are sent to the world we are not allowed to become part of the world. We need to be careful. There are too many compromises today. No one will enter heaven on his conditions!

I have many Christian Friends, and most enjoy a beer from time to time. It's not a sin as long as you don't go overboard. I think it's just as big a sin to sit at a dinner table and over-indulge. There is no difference.

And about going into a filthy bar, if you eat at O'Charlies or Applebee's these are bars as well!!! Again, no difference.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, drinking a can of beer*, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

This goes against the Bible on so many levels. How about the verse that says we are to "install from strong drink". As for just being there to try and reach the ones who won't come to church, doesn't it say in James that we are to be " in the world but not of it". Nowhere does it say "don't heed unto my words if you see differently" or " thou mayest be drunken with wine if thou useth thy better judgment"! I know that sounds a little corny, but that's what he's saying. Maybe he doesn't really know what the Bible says? I don't know. Hopefully someone will tell him as this "effort to evangelize" is further dragging the name of Christianity in the mud

Alcohol is a great evil in our society today and while the Scriptures are clear that the sin is not necessarily the drink itself but the excess to which it is taken I believe we are warned not to be a stumbling block to others and to shun the very appearance of evil. Meeting people where they are at is not about joining them in their pleasure of sinning. I know of many today who are far from God who at one time were close to the Kingdom but their so called Christian friends told them it was okay to take a pint just one, well maybe two and so began their journey into alcohol abuse. Dear Christian remember you will still stand before God you will not loose your salvation but you could loose your reward!

Yes indeed Frank. Check out the root, not so much the shoot. The ecumenical movement looks all nicey-nicey above ground, but the root is rotten. Thanks for pointing it out. I really ought to read the articles, eh?

Yet another episcopal apostate church, probably does not have the gospel as we know it, Frank.

I have been wondering about something. In the Episcopal Church they have women priests. So is a woman priest called Father? I just don't get why the Epicopal Church and other churches ordain women to the ministry when Saint Paul stated that only men were permitted to be ordained to the ministry? There is nothing wrong with consuming alcohol in moderation. I only drink a little bit of wine at Holy Communion. Otherwise I abstain from alcohol. There really is nothing theoretically wrong with conducting a Bible study at a bar and for that Episcopal Priest to have consumed a beer during the course of the Bible study.

Now if I read about a church where the pastor's wife was a Rev. and the fellow also went by the title Fr., then I would just assume whatever they were doing was wrong, or if not wrong that would be between them and the Lord who judges the hearts and not the outward appearance of things. If I got the right church site, I wouldn't get within 10 feet of them.

Lots of times these days with husbands and wives both working in churches, the pastor and wife desire to both formally be on church staff and receive salaries. Otherwise only he gets paid but his wife has to play piano, teach Sunday School and lead the mercy ministry (for example) as charity. And with seminary graduates walking away with a staggering $60-$75,000 in student loan debt (not including their wives' debt), she's compelled into the workforce.
