Janet Napolitano Denies Existence of ‘Orwellian State’

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano weighed in on the NSA intelligence leaks on Friday, telling NY1 that fears over government surveillance were overblown.

“I think people have gotten the idea that there’s an Orwellian state out there that somehow we’re operating in. That’s far from the case,” she told Errol Louis during an appearance on Road to City Hall.

Still, she acknowledged the federal government hasn’t done the best job of keeping the public informed about how it is treating the enormous amounts of personal information that could potentially be used in intelligence gathering. ...

A bureaucrat in denial. Thats just another way of saying she lies. No politician in the Liberal philosophy would ever admit to surveillance of the hoi polloi. That would be like asking a politician to tell the truth. The Democrats of today are the Big Brothers - (or to be more politically correct Big Sisters) of yesteryears fiction. Government to the Liberals is about telling the people what to say, think and do by whatever means you can. The population after all doesn't know enough to make correct decisions about their lives, do they? So education of the masses by the 'Party' is necessary for an efficiently run country.

Quote
"pervasive government surveillance, and incessant publicmind control, accomplished with a political system euphemistically named English Socialism(Ingsoc), which is administrated by a privileged Inner Party elite. Yet they too are subordinated to the totalitarian cult of personality of Big Brother, the deified Party leader who rules with a philosophy that decries individuality and reason as thoughtcrimes; thus the people of Oceania are subordinated to a supposed collective greater good" (novelguide/1984)

George Orwell merely pointed out the depths of human depravity apart from a transcendent God. This, of course, was not his aim in the book, but he understood the concepts of "man as the measure" and "might makes right". Napolitano is making the mistake of focusing on the current state of affairs. She thinks "we do not have signs saying war is peace or big brother is watching, so why would anyone think we are in an Orwellian state?" The mistake is not recognizing what used to be and what COULD be. In 1984, it said something to the effect of "Those who control the past now, control the future. Those who control the present now, control the past"
