Rescuers save a newborn from sewer pipe beneath public restroom in China

A newborn boy is recovering in a Chinese hospital after being rescued from a sewage pipe below a squat toilet by firefighters, who sawed off an L-shaped section and then delicately dismantled it to free the trapped baby.

A tenant heard the baby's cries in the public restroom of a residential building in Zhejiang province in eastern China on Saturday and notified authorities, according to the state-run news site Zhejiang News. A video of the two-hour rescue that followed was broadcast widely on Chinese news programs and websites late Monday and Tuesday.

The child — named Baby No. 59 from the number of his hospital incubator — was reported safe in a nearby hospital, and news of the rescue prompted an outpouring from strangers who came to the hospital with diapers, baby clothes, powdered milk and offers to adopt the child. ...

China has been rethinking it's one child policy for a while, but not for the pro-life reasons we would hope. Continuing to have 1 child per home average will actually lead to a large portion of the society being old as the newest generations during this one child policy would be dwarfed in comparison to previous ones. This can cause big economic issues once the much smaller generations become the working class to support the country's population through their taxes. So now it's possible to have 2 children, if you or your spouse don't have any siblings and neither do your parents. These laws only apply in the cities. There are no regulations for people living in the countryside

Somewhat interesting, Chris, is that China made a big to-do about saving this child. Of course it's good publicity, but China, China's population--The most surprising demographic crisis. Japan is also paying for it's high abortion rate.

So, perhaps China is rethinking its birthrate policy?

Miracles DO happen. We just can't call upon them as we see fit. I have to wonder if this child will grow up to make some sory if a difference in the world.
Oh, I just heard, as I was typing that they found the mother, decided not to press charges, and gave the baby boy back to her. Hmmm.
