German Homeschool Family Loses Asylum Case; Home School Legal Defense Association Will Appeal

A U.S. appeals court sided with the U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday and denied asylum for the Romeikes. They fled from Germany after they were threatened with the possibility of losing custody of their children when they decided to homeschool and refused to send their children to the German public schools.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the Justice Department, in Romeike vs. Holder, that the freedom to homeschool one's children is not among the fundamental rights protected for asylum seekers. The Home School Legal Defense Association, which represented the Romeikes in the case, said it will appeal the decision.

"We believe the Sixth Circuit is wrong, and we will appeal their decision," said Michael Farris, HSLDA founder and chairman. "America has room for this family, and we will do everything we can to help them." ...

I also hope their case will be taken all the way to the Supreme Court. This is a fundamental issue of human rights that needs to be settled. Do parents have a right to educate their own children without having to send them to government indoctrination centers, or do they not? This is an issue that needs to be settled once for all, or all future generations of Americans are in danger of losing parental rights regarding the education of their children.

S.F. John, say you may have a point! Instead they should go to Cuba, and take a boat from there, and declare themselves Cuban refugees! They couldn't be kicked out of our country then!

No, this is a disgusting turn of events in part to appease our great ally Germany. Hey, the price of German cars may go up, if we don't toe the line!

I hope this will be taken all of the way to Supreme Court, if need be, to help these folks stay here.

So the government forcefully separating
children from their parents for seven hours of instruction in atheism by the state does not infringe upon fundamental right. Got it.

I'm not used to seeing or even hearing about a white modern European family with more than one or two kids. These people have SIX. God bless them!

Germany believes that public schooling integrates subcultures and will mitigate notorious parties like the Nazis from ever reemerging. They see homeschooling as a general threat to national unity.

Homeschooling in Germany was banned in 1938 by a regime that is commonly considered to be the worst ever in existence. Likewise, it is commonly believed, that group no longer exists and yet the policies (not just this one) of that group live on today. Rather than disappearing into the annals of history, their philosophies and the power of the people holding to these philosophies has increased. All that faded is what they call themselves.

What incredible injustice we are witnessing! Here is a couple that is in the United States legally and that is in danger of losing custody of their children over a matter of conscience that clearly falls within their God-given rights as parents-- the right to educate their children as they choose. Yet no doubt, many of the same voices that are in favor of 'booting' this couple out of our country are in favor of granting a path to citizenship for millions of workers who are here illegally, and who broke our nation's laws to get here! If ever a family was deserving of political asylum in the United States, it is this couple; yet our wicked government has refused to grant them asylum, I suspect, because of the evil designs it has to restrict in the future the right of American citizens to educate their children as they choose!
