The Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge, available online, is a great resource. It gives cross references to compare Scripture with Scripture.

Avoid comments but choose a bible with meaningful references - IOW, references that truly cast more light on a passage not just give references to verbal similarity.

Correct on all three counts!

Ah, gentlemen, I would suggest that a new Christian pick up a
NASB - The Ryrie Study Bible
. You can get the only fit version of the KJV as a study Bible, The Ryrie KJV Study Bible Hardback-Red Letter, or a NASB - The MacArthur Study Bible. There is also a John MacArthur Bible out in the NKJV and ESV.

This will give people something study when they are at home with insightful advice.

I hope you fellows at least warn people to stay away, the gospel according to Gumbal The Gospel According to Gumbel (the Alpha Course)

Yes John UK, McCheyne's daily reading plan of the Bible is a great way for all to study their Bibles.

Well if they've ever heard of McCheyne, they might try putting into practice what he recommended to do with the Bible.
