Mother Declares Her Children Are "the Biggest Regret of Her Life"
Last week, the Daily Mail published a first-person story by Isabella Dutton, a 57 year old mother of two who declared her children to be "the biggest regret of her life." Since the Daily Mail is possibly the internet's leading purveyor of "human interest in hating other humans" stories, it goes without saying that the article incited (and was intended to incite) a monstrous tsunami of scorn.
"A mother could never regret her children." It's a truism. But considering the life-altering effect of children on their mothers, it seems impossible that it could really be a universal truth. Isabella Dutton is clearly very unhappy. She feels trapped by the intense demands of her children, calling them parasites. I know lots of mothers who feel this way sometimes. But feeling like your kids are sucking your life force is one thing. Feeling like they "give nothing meaningful back in return"? That's something...
It is hard without knowing the situation to know how to take this. Did the children turn out the way they did because of bad parenting? Or was it that the children just chose the wrong path bringing grief to their mother? Whatever the case I at least appreciate this woman's honesty. She needs to reconcile with her children and stop enabling them to use her if they are doing so.
Yikes. I have never heard anything like this said out loud, much less admitted by the children's own parent. I think that this statement alone should have got her children taken away because who's to say that the feelings of hatred don't get so intense that she murders them? Those poor children are growing up with the knowlede that their own mother hates them? Really incredible. I'd take them in a hearbeat.
