The Rise of Evangélicos

One Sunday late last summer, I saw a sign on the side of the road in Adelphi, Md. It was small, wedged between dozens of presidential campaign signs, and it was in Spanish: Iglesia de Dios del Evangelio Completo. Down the road I found another sign: Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Maryland. Soon I started seeing signs for Protestant Latino churches everywhere. There was even one right behind my apartment in Virginia. And so I decided to visit two of the largest Latino Protestant churches in the area—La Roca de la Eternidad in Adelphi and Iglesia Cuadrangular el Calvario in nearby Silver Spring.

What I discovered signaled a Latino Reformation. Both churches were doubling in size every few years. Many of the congregants were Catholic converts, and even more may have been undocumented. All were fervent believers—they sang with hands high, danced during worship, and often brought their own ...

jamesc, I should look if they put this book in Spanish, Charismatic Chaos and a quick look on the Internet, shows that it isn't. Quite a few Latinos come to this country to escape the Romish Church culture, only to be entangled in the Pentecostal one. I know I have a small latino church near me, but I don't know if they're pentecostal or not, this --might-- be a good site to steer who want their messages en Espanol. iones en video de Paul Washer en español? (Listado)

He seems to be disliked by some of the Reformed Churches and Arminians, I'm not sure what sort of recommendation that is for Mr. Washer?

Nice to hear. Where I live it seems most Hispanics are enslaved by the Catholic Church / Jehovah Witnesses. We have one street up here where you have the following churches on one street close to each other (JW, Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Mormon). Around the corner there is a Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church has one of those signs where they put verses. It would be nice if they put verses that would enlighten neighbors to the true Gospel.

Pentecostalism needs to be fought tooth and nail, A Look at the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement - Is it Biblical?. This is a good overview of the movement. While some Pentecostals may be Christian, the movement isn't.

In the series of articles, Charismatic Chaos. You can actually get most of John MacArthur's book by that name by checking into the above URL.

Chaos isn't Christian.

Barking in the spirit?

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is .... Galatians 5:23 ...temperance....

edit:
Aside from the barking stuff, I found this interesting
TIME's Elizabeth Dias states: "The evangelico boom is inextricably linked to the immigrant experience. Evangelicos are socially more conservative than Hispanics generally, but they are quicker to fight for social justice than their white brethren are. They are eager to believe in the miraculous but also much more willing to bend ecclesiastical rules to include women in church duties and invite other ethnic groups into their pews. The new churches are in many cases a deliberate departure from the countries and the faith their members left behind—but they don't look or sound anything like the mega-churches of the U.S."

I'm back at the doctor's office right now, and I had just read the newspaper article while waiting. I'm glad to see so many Latinos leaving the Roman Catholic church. I'm assuming Evangelical is the same as Charismatic? I didn't read this article because the newspaper was probably more in depth, but they sound Charismatic, and the photos as well, people slain in the spirit, women blurting our prophesies in the middle of sermons, etc. I'm just happy that so many eyes have been opened and that they were strong enough to break free from the Roman system that told them only they could save.
