IRS collecting tax payer information from Facebook and Twitter

You have until April 15th to file a return - and the IRS will be collecting a lot more than just taxes this year.

According to several reports, the agency will also be collecting personal information from sites like Facebook and Twitter.

It says the effort is to catch people trying to beat the system, but some say it goes too far.

So, let me understand, if you haven't cajoled and harassed everybody in your family into getting onto the Facebook brain numbing, time wasting "pastime" then you need to be targeted for tax evasion prosecution?
Lets use some methods that work, and have worked. Like verifying the social security #'s of the children or dependants listed on the return. Which can be automated much better than facebook trawling.
Not everyone feels the need to be applauded on their every conversational topic, action, or photo.
Most of us outgrow (outgrew?) the childish need for constant reaffirmation by
"show and tell" when we are (were?) leaving kindergarden behind.
Nor do we all like having to share with the info-vacuum what we discuss with our family and friends. Privately, or if you use such platforms, with the assumption of privacy that is a gossamer veneer.
According to TIME the IRS was trying to solve 650,000 cases of identity theft with only 3,000 workers so I can see how doublechecking FB could help if 2 people are claiming the same dependant. Of course it would be used in conjuction with other resources

Lets say you are IRS employee and you receive a return showing 6 dependants with lucrative child tax credits at an address of 123 Apartment lane. You check Facebook to find a young woman with a 2 seater sportcar, no child photos and only Dad and Sis showing in the relative section.
That might be somebody you would like to invite into the office

Has anyone actually seen that which could be called tax evasion on Facebook? The notion is silly.
