How is it that the Bible is so controversial? The recent series on the History Channel, “The Bible,” has sparked many water cooler and media conversations on various aspects of the Scriptures. One of them has important implications: Were Adam and Eve real people?
I’m not a scientist, and I don’t play one on TV. But I believe they were. Why? Because I believe Jesus was who He said He was – God’s only begotten Son, and clearly He believed they were real. I believe Jesus was the Son of God because historically He rose from the dead.
Jesus quotes from Genesis 1 and 2 (chapters with Adam and Eve) as the Word of God.
In short, the Bible’s argument is: No sin of Adam, no need for Jesus. But hasn’t science proven there was no Adam?...
I do believe that some things in the Bible are allegory. I don't think the story of Adam and Eve fall into that category, and it should go without saying but I don't buy into evolution by any means. My own beliefs about the Genesis account are in a minority, but I'm not the first one to create this theory. I believe that Adam and Eve were real, but I also believe that God created mankind--not Adam and Eve alone. Adam and Eve and their direct descendants were one specific family or you may say race. I believe this in part because when Cain wandered the Earth there were more humans out in the world at that time, and I don't think they were all Cain's sisters.
God has given us a glimpse into our past through the book of Genesis. It explains how sin came to be, how life came to be and why death is upon the animals and the plants, who have not sinned.
I think most of the "pontificating" (my word of the day after yesterday's event) on this subject, or most of the negative response to our beginnings is not the science but the anthropology of man, that is that we are sinners, in need of salvation.
In other words, if it came out all flowers for the state of man's condition, there would be more support for it.... after all these are generations that believe Darwin (that came out of the sponataneous generation theory), the big bang theory, and whatever other pop theories are coming out.
"How are we to understand claims of overwhelming “scientific facts” backing up the theory of evolution?"
Overwhelming facts? Maybe with micro, but certainly not macro.
Anyway, if we are to allegorize Adam and Eve, then how do we determine what other parts of the Bible are literal or allegorical? Sounds to me like everyone would begin to be able to mold the Bible around their lifestyles of choice if this was an acceptable way to interpret things.
To me, the Bible says what it means and means what it says. Period. Yes, there are allegories and symbolism but whereever they are, they are always clear.
