Gay rights vs. â€˜objectivityâ€™

Groups on the right are irate with the Associated Press for caving in to gay pressure and changing its influential Stylebook so that its writers will now refer to same-sex couples as â€œhusband and husbandâ€ or as â€œwife and wife.â€ But the change really shows that â€œobjectivityâ€ as conventionally defined does not exist.

The problem has been clear for years regarding abortion. Newspapers until the 1960s referred to creatures in womenâ€™s wombs as â€œbabiesâ€ or â€œunborn children.â€ Then they switched to â€œfetus,â€ technically correct but linguistically distancingâ€”and inconsistent, since they didnâ€™t go Latin by calling the mom a â€œgravidaâ€ or having their crime reporters write about the â€œcorpus mortuum.â€

Now, language usedâ€”â€œfetusâ€ vs. â€œunborn childâ€â€”quickly types a person as favoring or opposing abortion. New Orleans residents refer to their boulevard median strips as â€œneutral ground,â€ but we lack neutral ...
