Philippines contraception law signed by Benigno Aquino
Philippines President Benigno Aquino has signed into law a bill providing for free access to contraception and family planning.
Supporters say the law, which took 14 years to pass, will reduce poverty and maternal mortality in a country with the highest birth rate in the region.
The Roman Catholic Church repeatedly tried to block the bill.
The country's Congress failed to pass the measure several times before giving it final approval on 19 December.
Somewhat interesting Italy has allowed abortions since 1978 and Mexico city and some Mexican states also allow it. Now of course the Catholic Church opposes it, but then even people where this church dominates knows the answer is a resounding, "No!" to, Is the One True Church Roman Catholic?(PDF) So, it has little moral force, and this church even disapproves non-abortion techniques, as seen in 'Abortion rates plummet with free birth control'. Oh, in spite of the source of this article it is about the U.S.
Is abortion in Christianity a mistranslation of Bible?, this particular article points out the Jewish (and Puritan?) view of abortion. However this article emphasizes the idea of supporting marriage, and I would say so would the first article since we had threads that pointed out the problems of low birthrates for countries. It is certainly a sin for any married couple to have abortions of pregnancy --planned or not-- for purely economic reasons. I think many can agree with that, while ignoring the Romish Church.
