27 Dead in Connecticut School Shooting
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — A shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday left 27 people dead, including 18 children, an official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said the gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown was killed and apparently had two guns.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker was a 20-year-old man with ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that New Jersey State Police were searching a location in that state in connection with the shootings. That official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and ...

Its obvious to most people that the 2nd amendment was really designed 2 make sure militias were able to be armed. Anyway, I even have mixed feelings to a too stringent of banning of weapons.
Well Mike, it is a matter of opinion if Justice Stevens and myself are wrong. Perhaps one of these days it will be brought up has a constitutional amendment do what I believe and he does is vague language. Not so very vague actually just that it has to be made crystal clear to people who don't want it to be.
Historically challenged viewpoint, but that's ok. You have a personal right to it guaranteed by the same Bill of Rights. btw, is the axe you grind on this issue licensed and registered?

By the logic of lawandorder, it is the food's fault that people are overweight, it is the alcohol's fault that people are drunk, it the heroine's fault that people use and abuse the drug or the internet is at fault for a person with an addiction to porn. He needs to answer penned's post. We use examples of other things to show you the fallacy of your thinking not to say that anyone sin is better than another.

Is that free will philosophy comparing one sin with another to seek excusing them? All this just to allow you to justify having your own assault rifle. Does that make you feel more secure now?

More telling non responses. btw you need define assault rifle before talking of them, else we aren't communicating. As you know liberals are known for sidestepping facts to avoid reality, so they talk in generalities and exaggerations. You know, political correctness, "hate crimes," "our children," "peace and safety," "assault rifle shops in every mall," making up definitions as they go along out of the free will they claim not to have.

I have to say, liberals do think funny. But tellingly, they are silent on the recent stabbings of 20 or so people by a student with kitchen knives. Kitchen knives, something you actually can find in every mall. Perhaps a ban on assault knives would make you feel better? But wait, first we have to redefine them as assault knives, then call for their ban. Or we might pass a law mandating classes in peeling apples before one could buy a knife? I'm sure that would help.

I tell you what, progressives, how bout if you just make life easier for everyone and tell us what you plan to ban for our "safety"? .... there was the boy last week who was psychoanalyzed for spinning a pencil, other kids suspended for things like eating a pop tart to make it in the shape of a gun or something, there was the lady recently jumped by a police officer in texas and handcuffed because he was following her and she was creeped out and then he said she was walking the wrong way down the road. there's the homeless man in albequrque shot point blank for sleeping behind a rock on a trail....

so how about instead of spreading it out from tragedy to tragedy, why not just let us know right now, what is off limits and "unacceptable" behavior for the masses? Could you like print a decorative napkin with the brave new rules so that as I eat I can be reminded to comply to whatever it may be?

better yet, why not just take all the land, all our bank accounts, all our social rights, and just manage them in front of a panel with pretty little buttons? oh.... you say, that's already in the works?

what's left after a society that puts out phone apps rewarding people for snitching on their neighbor? there's still the nose on my face, and my dignity??

So, I believe he has the correct idea about state militias be just that, and not groups of gun totters. Anyway, if that is what the founding fathers meant, then those five words of Justice Stephens should be added.
Yawn.
1) It's already illegal for loonies to have weapons.
2) In the liberal left mind, the militia is the National Guard.
3) How will life be better for you if I don't have a rifle? How about I don't like you driving because so many innocent people are killed by cars? Make sense?
4) Wanting to add words to the amendment to make it say what is wanted is standard liberal quackiness. Also illegal, which also doesn't bother Stevens. That and changing what it originally meant is also standard treatment, fed by ignorance or denial of the founders' intent. They haven't actually got the public support for legally changing it by the amendment process, so...

So, I will point out now, and what I said before ---and--- what Justice Stevens said in his commentary, which is why I like it and referred to it, that the Second Amendment applied to states having militias that could arm themselves, not idiot vigilantes, nuts, and all too often people who can't get a driver's license can still get a gun making the country awash in guns. Steven's pointed out it has only been recently that everyone can have a gun was how this Amendment only recently got interpreted it wasn't for arming private militias. I still think assault weapons and concealed weapons needs to be more tightly regulated.
But anyway, Mike of N.Y., thanks again, for your input -- even if we don't agree.
Stevens and you are wrong, as I pointed out with quotes from Sam Adams and James Madison. If I have to believe what the 2nd says, I'll believe what the founders said. Anything contrary by the Supremes is bogus. btw, the militias were to be State run with the Governor as Commander in Chief. And every man was considered to be part of it. Not a "National" guard run by Washington. The 2nd as the others in the B of R were limits ON DC, therefore what it means isn't to be decided by DC.

Study history, Jim.

Mike of N.Y., you may be surprised to hear that I'm happy that you took notice of one my comments that isn't on the front page of SA news I would have hoped people would have noticed the one I posted on what the Vatican makes public and doesn't on the 5 year old thread, about making two of Satan's Emissaries "Saints." Oh, well.

You might have guessed from my brevity the post you quoted was done through the use of a tablet -- always something of a pain to type on. Justice Stevens: The five extra words that can fix the Second Amendment.
Still dredging up historical revisionism, Jim? Let's see what a couple founders said:

"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press, or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; or to raise standing armies, unless necessary for the defense of the United States, or of some one or more of them; or to prevent the people from petitioning, in a peaceable and orderly manner, the federal legislature, for a redress of grievances; or to subject the people to unreasonable searches and seizures of their persons, papers or possessions"
Samuel Adams

"American [have] the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust their people with arms."
James Madison

You know liberal judges can't read; you should stop believing what they say.

Hmm,
Philip Alpers wrote:
Just like President Obama, Howard was seen to weep and to offer the nation's prayers in the wake of another gun massacre. But only 12 days after the shootings, in Howard's first major act of leadership and by far the most popular in his first year as prime minister, his government announced nationwide gun law reform.

Attitudes to firearms and the regulations governing them had changed almost overnight. After a decade of gun massacres which saw 100 people shot dead and 38 wounded, Australians had overwhelmingly had enough of anyone with a grudge gaining easy, mostly legal access to weapons designed expressly to kill a lot of people in a very short time.

--excerpt from Drum wrap: a tipping point on US gun control? Oh, and Michael Stafford says,"America seems to love its guns more than the lives of its citizens."

Some interesting commentary from Down under.
