Youth ministry researcher Chap Clark says, “I’m convinced that the single most important area where we’ve lost ground with kids is in our commitment and ability to ground them in God’s Word.”
As a result, Barry Shafer says, “The church today, including both the adult and teenage generations, is in an era of rampant biblical illiteracy.” Duffy Robbins takes this one step further when he says: “Our young people have become incapable of theological thinking because they don’t have any theology to think about. … And, as Paul warns us, this … leaves us as ‘infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching’ (Ephesians 4:14).”
At the conclusion of the National Study of Youth and Religion, lead researcher Christian Smith reported: “Even though most teens are very positive about religion and say it’s a good thing, the vast majority are incredibly inarticulate...
2 generations ago when something was hard it challenged you to work harder. When you didn't understand a word you looked it up so you would grow in your intellect and understanding. Today we just say don't worry we will make a bible so easy to understand you'll never need to look up a word, use a commentary or ask a question. This dumbing down of our society is both strategic and tragic. And the so called experts continue to say we will read more with easier versions, statistically the opposite is true. Hmmm Psalms told us that already " thy word is pure therefore thy servant loveth it" maybe we don't love the word because we cast aside the pure word for that which is "easy" after all I only do my heavy lifting on Sundays...is this what Tyndale died for?
KJVOnly I commend you for being the exception in your generation. I teach teens in my congregation and to have a teen really desire the Word and seek knowledge is a rare thing.
This come to no surprise to me as a teen, I see this in my own Sunday school teen class, it seems I am the one with "much wisdom maketh sorrow"(for me that is)
ignorance ... no excuse wrote: now that the bible is 24/7/365, literacy should go up. sa is here for them. where are the teen listeners? access has never been better. bible illiteracy is no excuse.
No Excuse If you don't mind I am observing a wicked thing in the pulpits of 'modern churches'.
(I hate to use the word) Pastors with little regard for the immeasurable treasure the Bible, the very Word of the Living God is (TRUTH), are essentially giving a wicked excuse for their members to disregard God's Holy Word as well, abusing Scripture with a couple of selected verses to support their own religious projects, agenda and "modern" theology.
Like the warning to the Pharisee they would be judged by what Moses, who they claimed to believe, wrote, I have to consider it will be so likewise at the Great White throne judgment when many who said, 'Lord, Lord', will be judged by the things written in the very Books they gave lip service to believing, and their unfaithfulness to live by what God has said.
This is the outcome, when parents don't take the role, to " train there child, in the way he shall go". And give them over to a twenty year old " youth leader". Who likes to play video games, music, and sports.. Rather then reading the Word of God.. We are to blam for allowing the seeker friendly, neo Calvinism , emergent Church movement in to the house of God.. Churches should be integrated!! Not seperated!!
"I’m convinced that the single most important area where we’ve lost ground with kids is in our commitment and ability to ground them in God’s Word.”"
Nuuuh Surely not???
All the Bible study and teaching we see happening in schools and churches - it can't be?
"Bible Literacy" Hmmm Wonder what they think that is? How many bishops ministers preachers and congregations read the Bible and DON'T RECEIVE/PERCEIVE THE TRUTH.
And what now we are going to blame the kids for not being biblically literate.
The elect can read the Bible and receive the truth.
The liberals can read the Bible - if they actually bother - and receive moral decline and hot air.
The papists have been reading the Bible for centuries and receive idolatry and blasphemy.
Todays problem is as Jesus says too many nominal christians read the bible and receive the conviction that they are saved/can work towards salvation and HE DOES NOT EVEN KNOW THEM.
Matt 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you:
Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me"
This is a sad issue. We are failing the next generation. The article stated," “The church today, including both the adult and teenage generations, is in an era of rampant biblical illiteracy.â€
This is surely true. If we can't abide in the Word then the Word is not going to abide us.
