'Snob' Dawkins won't debate with islanders who observe the Sabbath
Richard Dawkins
Prof Dawkins has angered his many critics on the islands of Lewis and Harris - where the Sabbath is strictly observed and shops and leisure facilities are closed on a Sunday - by turning down the offer of a debate with the "Wee Frees" in their Hebridean heartland.
The Rev Iver Martin, minister of Stornoway Free Church, welcomed the visit and said the church endorsed "freedom of discussion and the exchange of argument".
He added: "However, with Richard Dawkins presenting a particularly one-sided narrative, I would hope that there would be opportunity for fair, even handed, reasoned debate at which both sides of the theistic argument can be heard."
Mr Dawkins told a local newspaper that debates made good drama, but did not make for good understanding....
Sunday is not the sabbath. Sunday is the 1st day of the week. Some christians treat it as a sabbath but it is not. The Scots used to keep the real sabbath for a 1000 yrs after Christ's death and resurection. Why did they stop ?
"the theologian and philosopher Keith Ward, will put the opposite point of view in a talk entitled "Why There Almost Certainly is a God"."
"Almost Certainly"??
Is that supposed to be an improvement on the Dawkins view?? Or just slightly more positive??
At least we can confirm that God knows that Dawkins is a Fool!! Sadly. Psalm 53:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good."
His life on earth is precarious, given only by the God he doesn't believe in. And maybe the Lord is planning a huge conversion for this man who is held high by atheists. God has converted atheists before on Lewis, and maybe will do so again. Either way, I think Dawkins visit to Lewis will have a profound effect upon his thinking.
I wonder if there are two or three elderly sisters praying right now, in the will of God, and by the Spirit of God, prayers which shall indeed be answered, as once before.
"Dawkins has angered his many critics" why?, surely he has as much "freedom" not to debate as Ivor Martin has to debate.Dawkins has heard all they have to say before and from all over the world, only GOD can change his heart and not the pride of men. Now that the church is shouting about his visit all the more will be going to hear him, it would have been best to have left his visit like a cold breeze coming to the island instead of what is now a storm.
