Southern Baptist leaders: Calvinism should not divide SBC
A panel of four Southern Baptist leaders Saturday (Aug. 4) talked honestly about the division within the convention over the issue of Calvinism while offering suggestions and maintaining that Southern Baptists should and can unite, despite differences.
"Baptists for 400 years have disagreed over this issue, and we're not going to come to some place where we all agree. I think we can come to a place where we all can work together," said Union University President David Dockery, one of the speakers at a conference sponsored by the Kentucky Baptist Convention. The conference, called "Calvinism: Concerned, Confused, or Curious," was held at Crestwood (Ky.) Baptist Church....
Bob. All I can say. Is test all things with scripture. The Bible says, we should be light in darkness. We are to be seperate from the things of this world. New Calvinism is all about being relivent and hip. many of the leading new Calvinist are very charasmatic , u have some that believe in theistic evolution, u have some that are teaching and support Roman catholic teachings. U have mark Driscoll, who is deeply rooted in new Calvinism. He uses fowl language and says he see's visions.. This looks nothing like the Calvinist of old. Spurgeon, Edwards, Calvin , etc.. The new Calvinist are nothing more then the seeker friendly, let's all get along ecumenicalist, Carasmastics. With the letter C added. Bob. Highly recommend listening to this. Goes in to more detail.
Pastor Ralph Ovadal They're no Puritans! On sermon audio. Blessings. Mike.
You could tell these guys were made to debate the issue because of the crazy radicals. They care more about the great commission and sharing the doctrine of salvation. God bless the SBC.
Mike, thank you for the website and I will continue to read and consider. But there again, it may be the area I'm in but the site lists 5 characteristics of new calvinists.... 1) Doctrinal Shallowness 2) Loves the things of the world 3) Profoundly ecumenical 4) Social activism 5) Low view of scripture
of these I would say the local SBC "non calvinist" churches that I'm familiar with fall prey to these areas much more than the "calvinist" churches. Especially #1, #2, and #5. On the other points these churches are not ecumenical but rather profoundly denominational and social activism must be handled very carefully so as not to offend anyone's political affiliations.
Question, I've heard of the Founders Ministries...where do they stand in relation to new calvinism?
Bob.Dr Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is one of the biggest names in the New Calvinist camp.  While there are certain characteristics around which New Calvinists are united, it is a broad movement, and not all practice their faith in the same way. While most claim to be faithful to Scripture, and to follow the essential tenets of Calvin’s theology, many are marked by a love for the ways and things of the world, which manifests itself in unbecoming conduct that is far removed from the ways and beliefs of traditional Calvinists and Puritans. I would recommend
The Doctrines of Grace is what Calvin taught and is what finally gave me peace in my walk with Christ. I was seeking the truth and the Spirit led me to the 5 points. Once my mind and heart was opened to understand, everything else in the Bible came together for me and all made sense! I give God all praise and glory that he used His humble servant JC to show me the truth. "Seek ye 1st the kingdom of God and His righteousness."
Mike, you say "Most of the Calvinism in the SBC is new Calvinism". What do you base "most" from? My reason for asking is not to diagree with you but rather for my info. I know many (200+) families involved in SBC churches and of those I know a few (~10) that would say yes, I know who Calvin is and what he taught was accurate. Of that 5% none of them would fall into your classification of "New Calvinism". Maybe it's because I live in the Bible Belt but my observations show that those who understand Calvin's teachings to be much more sincere in their faith then those who openly oppose Calvin's teachings.
Most of the Calvinism in the SBC is new Calvinism. It looks nothing like Calvinism of old. New Calvinism is ecumenical, relivent with worldly Philosophy, music, dress, and wants to be hip with the world.
