Southern Baptists make history, elect first black leader
NEW ORLEANS — The Southern Baptist Convention voted Tuesday to elect its first black president in one of its biggest steps yet to reconcile the 167-year-old denomination’s troubled racial past and appeal to a more diverse group of Christians.

The Rev. Fred Luter Jr. was unopposed in being elected by thousands of enthusiastic delegates Tuesday at the annual meeting of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination in his hometown of New Orleans.

The Rev. David Crosby of First Baptist New Orleans nominated Mr. Luter, calling him a “fire-breathing, miracle-working pastor” who “would likely be a candidate for sainthood if he were Catholic.”

Mr. Crosby recalled how Mr. Luter built the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church from a tiny congregation to a megachurch of nearly 8,000 before the buildings were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. ...

You are 75 years late with that label.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:
Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

For those who haven't read the book I mentioned, here is a decent summary of John Brown's beliefs

Basically, Brown considered Southern chattel slavery an act of war against blacks which justified violence against slaveowners. Unlike Cromwell, this is not all that far afield from previous examples of Calvinist civil disobedience (e.g. the Huguenots' Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos, the Covenanters' Sanquhar Declaration).

If you read accounts of how slaves were treated (IMHO, worse than in the Soviet GULAGs), Brown's violence is more understandable. He was unusual in that unlike most Abolitionists, he was actually comfortable around black people, and Indians too.

I base this claim on the work of a secular biographer who has no evident Christian commitments, yet is sympathetic with Brown overall & thus has no incentive to make up anything about Calvinism. Just because the Secret Six were Transcendentalists, does not imply that Brown was one as well.

You supply no refuting evidence. Calvinists, same as non-Calvinists, have murdered before, e.g. Oliver Cromwell. Deal with it.

That Jesus didn't "demand" Abolitionism is a Red Herring. Southern chattel slavery (vs. other forms) was unmitigated evil, as Presbyterian Alexander McCleod proved decisively in 1802 with a wholly Biblical analysis called "Negro Slavery Unjustifiable." Other Puritans before his time knew this as well.

What an awful lie and untruth! "It is not known" that Brown--America's first terrorist--was a Calvinist because it's not true! Brown and Dabney, the same theology? What an irrational and patently absurd assertion!

Brown committed blatant murder in his abolitionist fanaticism (see "What John Brown did in Kansas"). John Brown was involved in many murderers and cut off people's arms and hands who were slave owners! Brown led an Insurrection at Harper's Ferry, and was an advocate of Black Liberation Theology (which abolitionism feeds off of), and advocated insurrection, violence, murder--gross and criminal sins against individuals and States! John Brown was a madman and demonstrated the radical Liberation Theology of Abolitionism, similar to that which sparked the French Revolution. (Read about the Secret Six who sponsored John Brown).

Jesus never demanded abolitionism of slavery, nor does the entire New Testament, but rather upheld the Master-Servant relation.

Abolitionist John Brown once visited a northern Congregational church. He noticed that blacks were made to sit in the back. Outraged, he insisted that they take his pew near the front, & he sat at the back. Later he was visited by a delegation of deacons who undertook to reprove him, but he in turn gave them a stern talking-to. I imagine that he cited James 2:1-5.

He ceased attending that church. BTW, it is not well known that he & his father were hardcore Calvinists, very familiar with the works of Jonathan Edwards. Funny, that Brown & R.L. Dabney could hold to the same theology, yet reach opposite conclusions about social equality.

"Slavery was not the only precipitating issue for the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention, but it was the central issue. The SBC was forged in the bitter and humiliating defense of slavery and institutionalized racism. For more than a century beyond its founding, that institutionalized racism continued, with the majority of Southern Baptists resisting the Civil Rights movement."
Albert Mohler, SBTS President

Luter leading the SBC is like a faithful Jew leading a reformed neo-Nazi party.

"Since that gesture, the denomination has grown its nonwhite congregations from only 5 percent in 1990 to 20 percent in 2010, though its leadership has not diversified as rapidly as membership"

I wonder what the race-ratio should be to qualify as a true Christian denomination.

"Russell Moore, dean of the school of theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., shudders when he thinks about slavery and the SBC:

"I stand here on a campus that was founded by men who could clearly articulate what it means to be saved, and at the same time defended human beings [owning] other human beings," he said. "That's mind-boggling in its perversity.""
-SBTS

It took 1,500 years for someone to clearly articulate what it means to be saved, but the schismatic SBC leaders couldn't figure out that when Jesus said to "love even thy enemy," He didn't mean you should appoint your farmer-members as "missionaries" to a captive people group and then they would whip that group.

Yes, excellent point from a Christian bro in Africa! EXACTLY!

The New Southern Baptists have done exactly what America did in electing Obama, i.e. electing an Affirmative Action President, instead of the most qualified candidate. The SBC has bowed to Political Correctness in an attempt to distance themselves from their more godly (mark that) forefathers, who held better doctrine (i.e. doctrines of Grace, commonly called Calvinistic) and refused to bow to Humanistic reasoning on even the Master-Servant relation (per Colossions, Ephesians, Titus).

The SBC is a politically-correct institution that is ashamed of what the Bible truly teaches and continues to bow to Democratic Humanism (liberalism) and would persecute their own forefathers, as if they are more righteous. Feminism is also rampant within this PC denomination which will continue to shrink.

"(Reuters) - The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination, has narrowly agreed to let churches use an alternative name less connected to the South and the group's past ties to slavery, leaders said on Wednesday.
"Some said the convention's ties to slavery upon its founding in 1845 posed a barrier for growth. Southern Baptists split from the First Baptist Church in America in the pre-Civil War days over slave ownership."
"Over a century and a half ago, Baptists in the south split from Baptists in the north over the issue of slavery. Southern Baptists wanted to appoint slave owners as missionaries, and the northern Baptists disagreed. And so in 1845, the Southern Baptist Convention was born."
Now answers to SBC and GCB.
First they were baptists at a convention, a meeting, a gathering.
Now they'll be known as just a basket of loose baptists -- no meeting.
Curiously they've never wanted to be called a church.

Galatians 3
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.---NASB

It will be great when Christians ignore the color of people's skin when sizing them up, but only their track record.

I would have to say that so-called endorsement given by the Rev. David Crosby, I would consider more of a condemnation than praise, "miracle worker," and all Christians are "saints." A catholic saint is usually picked out for anti-Christian attitudes, if not practices.
