Statement on Calvinism sparks blog discussion

A May 30 statement aimed at critiquing Calvinism launched a discussion within the Southern Baptist Convention nearly immediately when it was posted online, and the debate has yet to slow down.

The statement -- which affirms what the signers call the "traditional Southern Baptist" understanding of the doctrine of salvation and draws a distinction with the beliefs of "New Calvinism" -- includes signatures from two entity presidents (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's Paige Patterson and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary's Chuck Kelley), seven state executive directors (Georgia's Bob White, Florida's John Sullivan, Mississippi's Jim Futral, Louisiana's David Hankins, Alaska's Mike Procter, Colorado's Mark Edlund, Indiana's Cecil W. Seagle), and in addition to Patterson, five other former SBC presidents (Bailey Smith, Jimmy Draper, Jerry Vines, Morris Chapman and Bobby Welch).

Consider mercy. A woman comes out of the wilderness asking for a cup of water. Does she say, "the man who is merciful is the one who gave me the correct biblical definition of mercy"? Or does she say "the man who is merciful is the one who gave me a glass of water"?
So it is with faith.

Dear Ephesus, These things says He who holds the seven stars in his RIGHT HAND, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands. I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you can not bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles, and are not, and have them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have laboured for my names sake and have not become weary. Nethertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, repent and do the first works or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from it's place - unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate. He who has an ear let him HEAR what the SPIRIT says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give to eat from the tree of LIFE, which is IN the midst of The Paradise of GOD.

So whats the difference?

Look at the verse
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?"
3. Can you do as much?
1. You are pretending the people in Matt 7:22-23 believed in Jesus for their salvation. They did not. They didn't even try to claim to have. They just claimed to perform miracles and works in Jesus' name.
2. Jesus rejected them for not believing.
3. No, so I must not be of that group of people.

Matt 8: 5-13. "For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, `Go!' and he goes, and to another, `Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, `Do this!' and he does it." Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, "Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.

Matt 9:2 SEEING their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven."

Faith is SEEN in it's works.

The works of faith are listed in the bible. *By faith Abraham left Ur ... *by his faith the centurion came to Christ for help, *by her faith the woman would not be deterred, by *their faith the men brought the paralytic.

*Oh yea of little faith ...

*If you had faith the size of a mustard seed this mountain would be moved into the sea.

Faith is SEEN. So we don't have to talk about faith as if it were a mystical state kept a secret in the heart. The Bible is plain speaking, but if you are going to try to divine it's hidden secrets it will cause you to go blind and you will begin leading the blind who will hang on your every word.

But when the son of man returns will he find faith on earth?

Pe 1:9 says "Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls".

If saving faith is a gift from God why does this verse and other verses as well say that Faith is something that I do, seeing that it says "My faith" or "your faith"?

Dwayne me dear friend, I don't suggest that you do anything but God commands you and everyone else to to do this:

Acts 16:29-31 KJV

Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

The Larger Catechism Q72 confirms that faith is a saving grace - not a faculty of man. The supporting verse Heb 10:39 phrase quote, "believe to the saving of the soul"
(B) ONLY to the Arminian save thyself brigade.
(C) Faith is given by God as a gift. After it has been providentially given it then belongs to the mortal, and is used by the Holy Spirit in the heart of the elect.
(D) Jesus came to save sinners - Not believers! The sinner in his natural estate is deaf, dumb and blind about all that is spiritual and intended for saving, ie "dead in sin".
(A) The Westminster Confession of Calvin? I'm not really sure, it should have been WCF. Hebrews 10:39 only says one must believe to receive the saving. As my statement says...I believe the scripture teaches one to obtain grace through their faith. Popes believe once someone is saved it is their work to keep it. I do not.
(B) Or someone who understands principles of grammar.
(C) The Holy Spirit isn't even given until after faith.
(D) Jesus came to save sinners who believe.

No. I was born of the Holy Spirit after faith.

DOPEY...I "understand" that God saves by grace through faith.
That is an encouragement. But "understand" this:

Hell is currently full of people who dropped into hell, with a lot more to drop there, who understood before they died that to quote you "God saves by grace through faith." They had a head knowledge of what the truth equals and some of them believed it. But they still ended up in hell and will yet be raised from the jail house that equals hell to have a public judgment at the
"great white throne" judgment where it will be announced and revealed why they are being sent to the eternal prison of
the lake of fire:

Revelation 20:11-12 KJV

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God;...

Revelation 20:14-15 KJV

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

John for Jesus, or anyone who may currently "understand", "that God saves by grace through faith." do you really want to end up in "hell" then later "the lake of fire"

Could somebody please explain to me what this verse really means? If God's will is never revoked why do some people go to hell?
Who this passage refers to isn't too hard to understand if you keep a few things clear in your head.

1) Who is the statement directed to? "...but is longsuffering to us-ward." Who is "us" and referred to in verse 1, "This is the second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you...". And, if you look at who 1 Peter is addressing, "...to the strangers scattered throughout...Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father..." So, this statement is directed to the elect.

2) The "any" is referring to the "us"

3) The "all" here is refers to the "any" and can't refer to everyone because the Epistle refers to those who will be destroyed.

Imagine adding "of us" immediately after the "any" and "all".

So now you should be able to see where God's will is being applied: the elect.

The Scripture foundation for that truth in God's Word in the Old Testament is here:

Genesis 4:6-7 KJV

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Perhaps, some other brothers will provide from God's Word in the New Testament an amplification of the truth revealed in Genesis 4:6-7 provided:

1. they believe it themselves.
2. God leads them to do it.

An interesting observation:

"Not willing that any should perish. So wonderful is his love towards mankind, that he would have them all to be saved, and is of his own self prepared to bestow salvation on the lost. But the order is to be noticed, that God is ready to receive all to repentance, so that none may perish; for in these words the way and manner of obtaining salvation is pointed out. Every one of us, therefore, who is desirous of salvation, must learn to enter in by this way.

But it may be asked, If God wishes none to perish, why is it that so many do perish? To this my answer is, that no mention is here made of the hidden purpose of God, according to which the reprobate are doomed to their own ruin, but only of his will as made known to us in the gospel. For God there stretches forth his hand without a difference to all, but lays hold only of those, to lead them to himself, whom he has chosen before the foundation of the world." (John Calvin)
