Mohler: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

Are conservative Christians hypocritical and selective when it comes to the Bible’s condemnation of homosexuality? With all that the Bible condemns, why the focus on gay sex and same-sex marriage?

Given the heated nature of our current debates, it’s a question conservative Christians have learned to expect. “Look,” we are told, “the Bible condemns eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics and any number of other things. Why do you ignore those things and insist that the Bible must be obeyed when it comes to sex?”

On its face, it’s a fair question. But it can be posed in two very different ways.

First, the question can be asked to suggest that the Bible’s clear condemnation of sexual sins can simply be set aside. The other way of posing the question represents a genuine attempt to understand how the Bible is to be rightly applied to life today. ...

Content is almost irrelevant when subterfuge is involved.

Speaking personally, I take with a pinch of salt, claims made by new posters, or old posters with a new moniker. S'funny how all on a sudden there are new monikers appearing on this thread, all with the same agenda. How does anyone know it isn't the "I hate BJU Society"? Or yet another group of Roman Catholics determined to stamp on anything Protestant?

Yes, it does seem to be a cultish type of school. They are not very comfortable being open to questions.

I also looked into this school for my kids a few years ago and I had many people say it messed their kid up bad.

They also said that the kids that go to BJU do to parents forcing them, which I understand is more than half of them, do not want to go back to an IFB church, which I have heard that BJU controls because the pastors of teh IFB churches were educated at BJU.

I was pleased to learn of some of the rules which are good if you do not want to be a grand parent early.

After looking into BJu further, I just felt like something was wrong here and now after reading about this Chuck Phelps situation, I will not be sending my kids there for sure.

It is sad that power seems to corrupt almost if not all of these Charasmatic leaders eventually.

I couldn't fathom that this pastor, Chuck Phelps, that covered up a couple of rapes in his church, would be asked to join the BJU board.

Apparently BJU knew about this before they asked Chuck Phelps to join and I really can't see How they could care about my kids as they claim to.

If they claim to be of Jesus, why do they care about Chuck Phelps? Why did they not care about Justice at all in Tina Anders

That is why I left his church. He never wanted to talk about what actually happened at his New Hamshire Church, where the crimes of forcable rape took place.

Actually everyone at this NH Chuch was lead to believe that the person who raped Tina, just had

an affair with some lady but not from church and so no one knew there was a real rapist in the church until this story came out.

Our family is nouns fan of BJU or Chuck Phelps anymore.

John UK, a good point. on the other side of the coin, BJU board member resigns or for that matter, Ex-pastor quits board of university which is an article from a reputable newspaper.

pgq, I like that quotation -- excellent!

Reinhold Niebuhr wrote:
The tendency to claim God as an ally for our partisan value and ends is the source of all religious fanaticism.

Man's capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary.

Religion is so frequently a source of confusion in political life, and so frequently dangerous to democracy, precisely because it introduces absolutes into the realm of relative values.

oops different Neibuhr I think this one that Jimmy Carter liked.

H. Richard Niebuhr famously once distilled liberal theology into this sentence: “A God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a cross.”

Thus the sodomite is sinless!!

According to the Liberal teachings of these nice "church folks" who don't need a Bible.

Is BJU a cult? Can someone answer this question any better than myself? here is my humble view. The Bible says to shoot the wolves or point them out.

Absolutely Yes. No question about it. I am 1000% sure of it. A cult is when you have a situation like Chuck Phelps and him becoming a decorated Villain and admired by Bob Jones III for his amazing Cover Up skills so much that he wants a Rapist protector on his board of trustees. Probably to help educat how others can do as good a job as he did.

Watch the trial on you tube and Chuck's own Testimony, you could see that he was lying a ton and he hated anyone questioning him for his purposeful cover up and the court had to even call Chuck a hostile witness because Chuck Phelps changed his story so much.

Plus, this Rapist had 5 Counts of Felonious Agravated rape convictions & Chuck would say, before court, that there was only 1 incident that it was a mutual relationship BUT in court Chuck said 2 incidents & Ernie. Chuck did call the cops but did not have time for a 10 minute written police report but he did have 5 days to help construct a location & a family that would take Tina Anderson in 2,000 miles away and put a cork in her mouth. BJU even after knowing this still wanted Chuck Phelps on their board.

Now what do you

The main reason we see a focus on the sin of homosexuality instead of the ones that Jim mentions, is not because they are any less sins in the sight of a holy God, but there is not a group of thieves trying to say being a crook is just an alternative lifestyle, drunks and liars are trying to push their agenda for "equal" rights, perjurers and swindlers are not trying to get their beliefs taught in public schools, and we don't hear the term adulteryphobic.

Of course other type of sinners can be added to that list, such as liars and perjurers, besides others Of course these sins are much less likely to be talked about because for many Christians they not only hit too close to home; they do hit home.

Jim don't forget this one.
Revelation 22:19 (KJV)
19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Well, if govt's want to establish a relationship between same sexes then there is nothing that keeps them from doing it and giving it whatever name they desire but yet they do not do that because what they really want (not sure if they realize it or not) is to redefine what God has said. i.e. Hath God said....

Marriage is a Biblical term, unless you mean Church also in a Biblical manner? But, in any event, it goes back past the New Testament,

Matthew 19
4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read, that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,
6 "Consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
1 Corinthians 6
16 Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, "THE TWO WILL BECOME ONE FLESH."
17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18 Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.---NASB

So, it is more than an New Testament Church concept.

FIRST OF ALL MARRIAGE IS A PICTURE OF OUR RELATIONSHIP TO CHRIST...Have not I espoused you to one husband...2Cor.11:2. And before in Isaiah......Thy Maker is thine husband,......Is.54:5, Then we are clearly taught to honor our Mother and homosexuality is the one sin that completely destroys God's order. And we make our socieity sicker than it is already!

It appears that Ross Douthat (who wrote the book, "How We Became a Nation of Heretics" is a member of the Roman Catholic "church", so caution here.

Christians have historically focused on the sin of sodomy for two primary reasons: 1) Paul uses it as a measuring stick for degrees of sin and reprobation in Romans chapter 1 and 2), It brings God's harshest, judgment and destruction on both nations and individuals.

It's not the sin of being a so-called 'homosexual' that causes the problem. That's insinuating that you can indeed be 'born that way'. It is the act of sodomy and it's widespread acceptance that brings God's judgment.

Christians should continue to focus on the sin of sodomy. It is destroying America.
