John MacArthur on Divorce: We Can't Edit God

Editor's note: You can find the complete audio of this particular series on 'divorce' by John MacArthur here on SermonAudio.com by clicking here..

Pastors should not be afraid of offending their followers with the message that God hates divorce despite churches having congregations that often reflect the same alarming rate of divorce as the general population, said theologian and pastor John MacArthur.

"We have one responsibility as pastors and that is to teach the word of God. We don't have an alternative. We can't edit God. That's the wrong thing to do," said MacArthur during a recent broadcast on Focus on the Family Daily.

"We have been called into this ministry for the purpose of disseminating to our generation the truth of the word of God. We have no other message. I have no other message than what God has put in the word," he added while discussing the subject with FOTF President Jim Daly.

"Heterosexual Christians may jump from bed to bed as long as they remarry and repent."

First, if someone who claims to be a Christian is sleeping around, they need to examine themselves to find out if their salvation is real.

Second, "What shall we to say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?... knowing this that our old self was crucified with Him, in Order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin." Romans 6:1-2, 6-7

According to this text we do not have the freedom to continue in sin because God will forgive.

Either vow "Till death do us part" (BCP) or "except for immorality" (NASB). MacArthur knows there's an unsearchable chasm between these two covenants.

We can't edit God.

I don't see how God was editted. Hopefully the same point comes across, no Christian qualifies to be a pastor or deacon if they have been divorced and remarry.

There are Christian men out there who are righteous in Christ and meet the biblical criteria for pastor or deacon. Adulterers do not. Why, do you think I should have worded it different?

That's rock solid?! I hope you are being sarcastic. MacArther is correct that God hates divorce, but God also hates adultery. Whenever someone gets divorced and then marries someone else, they have committed adultery. Not only that, they are no longer worthy of serving as a pastor or a deacon.
The divorcing and "remarrying" rampant in many falsely so-called "churches" today is the redefinition of marriage that has paved the way for sodomites to demand to be able to "marry."

Would to God more taught the Bible's truth on this doctrine. The credibility of one's Christian testimony is seriously marred when one divorces and "remarries," especially repeatedly. Many professing Christians treat marriage just like the serial dating the world long ago embraced and portrays as necessary.

I was born with an intense attraction to sin (drinking, fornication, you name it). Does that mean I can live in it?? Of course not! People are born sinners not homosexual. We need Christ so that the natural desires of the flesh can be put to death.

And the only time Jesus mentions this "save for the cause of fornication" is in Matthew which was written to the Jews and if anyone knows how the Jewish marriages worked this wouldn't be a debated topic!
Bottom line is this. If you are married and you have sex with someone other than your wife this is called adultery!!
Galatians says these people will not inherit the kingdoms of God!! Whether they say they are Christians or not!

These evil sinners you describe here are NOT Christians.

Nobody (R) Nobody is born homosexual.
That is a choice made under and in the domination of sin. This is the natural state of mankind not after regeneration by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not dwell in an abomination.

clarity, first of all a homosexual is not "married" if he leaves a homosexual relationship and doesn't enter into another--and repents--he can be saved.

1 Corinthians 6
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.---NASB

MacArthur clarified that the adulterer must repent. Once he remarries and repents of this sin, he's no longer an adulterer.

Homosexuality is entirely different than adultery. You just repent of adultery, but stay married to your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th wife and you'll get to heaven.

But if you're married to your first same-sex spouse, you can't repent of homosexuality, stay married and still get to heaven. You have to break up even if you love the Lord, are 100% pro-life and have four or five children with your gay spouse.

MacArthur's rock solid marriage doctrine could be boiled down to this:

"You may not return to your 1st wife unless you remarry her. And once you've remarried her, you may not return to your 2nd wife unless you remarry her. Then, you must remain with her."
