Feds want to nix Geneva College lawsuit

The U.S. Justice Department has asked a federal judge in Pittsburgh to dismiss Geneva Collegeâ€™s lawsuit challenging proposed regulations requiring employers to offer birth control coverage that includes so-called morning after drugs that abort fertilized embryos, saying thatâ€™s â€œdirectly at oddsâ€ with its religious values.

The department says Geneva College in Beaver Falls wonâ€™t face any enforcement action until at least 2014 and that the law may well change before then to accommodate such religious views. However, the motion for dismissal doesnâ€™t say what the school is supposed to do if those changes arenâ€™t made by then.

The Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian civil rights group, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh in February. ...
