'Prosperity theology' embraces wealth

In 1905 Max Weber wrote "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" in which he described how a religiously instilled work ethic became a moral imperative in forcing capitalist economics. Weber went beyond the surface structure of Protestantism and probed deeper political and economic aspects of how religion became the foundation of pre-corporate capitalism.

The economy has moved on and so has Protestantism. Today the largest and fastest growing Christian churches in America espouse a new type of Christianity called prosperity theology, also known as Gospel prosperity or Christian materialism, which does for 21st century corporate capitalism what early 20th century Protestantism did for regular capitalism: connect economics to God's blessing.

Today prosperity theology is promoted by megachurches and televangelists. Its message is, if you tithe and attend church, God will bless you with ...

Fair point, and taken.

But the pseudo churches I was thinking about are the Roman Catholic Church and the Prosperity Church Movement, both of which are so self-evidently rotten to the core and false that even Jack Russell could nod his head and give a woof that they are so.

Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. Many will be the pastors who sell their very souls for even the small comforts of this passing world.

Thanks John UK!

It is true that Bob Jones U. & Of Course Triplestix himself, is hiding a lot of siphoning money from so many facets of it's legions of tentacles all over the world in the name of Christ for their own desires and self centered needs.

Let us pray that God will allow these same people to recognize their sins and realize they have a bad heart.

These Fundamentalist have big mouths but
they are quiet about where all of the money is hidden that is only for the Jones family and a few other compadres.

It is very sad that most of their IFB followers are clueless on these issues.

Everyone keep a close eye on these people and the monies they have accumulated.

God will reveal these truth's soon.

Original James wrote:
Where a man's treasure is there will his heart be also.
Correct. It divides christendom into two camps; the genuine and the false Christian.

Matthew 6:24
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

It makes it very easy to discern true churches and pseudo-churches.

Some organizations claiming to represent Christ, have their heart with the Money as James Points out.

These Big empires always have a plate passing while they have vast hoards of cash they also control.

While, being wealthy beyond comprehension, a few at the top, will ask for money to promote the gospel & for Missions. They do not bother mentioning that they are the chairman of these same mission boards, like Bob Jones III, which controls many mission organizations.

They do not really want this publicly known because there are many jobs for their friends & there is a lot of other monies extracted from what your missionary giving is suppose to go to so that these Bob Jones can make money for printing stuff or other services they need.

Most people are not aware of how wealthy Bob Jones really is.

Why would you ask a poor debt ridden college student for more money for missionaries that will not even get a job in their field, especially something like a Bible major which it is good know the Bible but expensive & criminal at $80,000. Bob knows 98% if not more will never get a job in "The ministry" & that they will be debt ridden for life.

I would think if your mission is missions, you could see the depravity in this.

Now we know Bob Jones heart is for a lot

I agree with former supporter. We are not to build up dynasty's or empires for ourselves or build a specific brand of Christianity for a few to control.

That is not why we should be telling the simple gospel and our only alegiance should be to Christ only and not a man "like a Bob Jones" or equivalent. Know owns the truth but Christ.

We are not, if called, to build big buildings sometimes called God's houses. He only lives I'm the heart of men.

It was easy to know in the past who loved the Gospel of Christ because they did everything for Christ & not passing down a thrown to the next Jones boy.

I agree Jim that Giving is not at all about a percentage or what someone else use to do either.

Thank God we have been freed from the law. Legalism is quoting law out of context & then applying it to this new covenant of Grace & with the goal of making people feel guilty as if the Holy Spirit is convicting you.

They are very clever as most wolves are, Like Chuck Phelps saying he called the cops once but never filed a written police report concerning the confessed and later convicted Rapist that Raped Tina Anderson.

Chuck has never confessed his Crimes and merely acted as if he forgot to do something maybe but he wouldn't have done anything differnt, which means he is fine with hiding & shipping Tina 2,000 miles away & protecting a known rapist while lying & deceiving his N.H. Church about it so everyone was at risk & who knows how many more rapes were done?

BJU was fine with Chuck criminal behavior and never talked to Tina nevere read were chuck was considered a hostile witness menaing he changed his testimony.

Also Bob Jones is on the board or the chairman of the board to a lot of mission org. The money goes through BJU first then to misssionary's BJU has 125,000,000 plus paid off land & Multi Millions in Art. Giving $$ to these guys is bad stuardship!

Former supporter, please don't let me stop you in expressing your opinion--which you have every right to do--but then my memory works well enough that you had other issues with the Bob Joneses and their university, which were apparently corrected and I hope isn't coloring your present unhappiness with them.

My pastor has preached (in fact, the sermon of last Sunday morning, about giving--which isn't up yet on SA, when this message was typed) which would address the issue of tithing.

Tithing is a legalism from the Old Testament, and Christians aren't under that dispensation. Giving is not a compulsive tax!

2 Corinthians 9
6 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully.
7 Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.---NASB

So, in actuality I have problems with you complaining about people who want to put people under Old Testament Law.

Former Supporter, I think you are touching on something that I have noticed. There are many churches who preach against the prosperity gospel (non-charismatic), yet preach another form of it! ---its really American materialism that changes our theology to accomodate the culture and the desire to be wealthy and live a life of ease.

Thanks Jim. I am not professing myself to be better than anyone.

I am merely pointing out the truth. I agree TNN & Olsteen are worse.

Jim, does the fact the some one lies more mean that I can't point out someone that lies less but still keeps saying the lie?

Do you trust someone that lies to you? Titus 1:11 -Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Jim, Bob Jones himself said, it is never right to do wrong to want to do right. Isn't that right? Well, when he lies & his pastors lie that have been trained by him the BIBle says to point it out.

Jim, Are the IFB Churches Ruled By The The Mini BJU Vatican with a Baptist Poe Bob Jones III wrong when they lie about Tithing instead of teaching what the Lord Jesus they claim is their Saviour said?

Why assume that I am a Publican because I have been lied to by these same pastor types? Do you think God cares who lies in his name and then says well these guys steal a little less for themselves than these guys do?

A Liar is a Liar & a False prophet is a False Prophet? Hmm

So why do you defend known Liars & why imply without knowing me & suggest that I am saying, I'm glad I am not like them Lord? Expose all wolves. The Bibl

I would think you would do better to attack someone like Olsteen. Taking the Measure of Joel Osteen (The Albert Mohler Radio Program) or Paul Crouch and TBN.

I do say you have a good point about tithing. A multimillionaire should give more than 10% of his wealth to God's purposes, while a poor person may be lucky to give anything.

Luke 18
11 "The Pharisee stood and was praying thus to himself, 'God, I thank Thee that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-gatherer.
12 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.'
13 "But the tax-gatherer, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!'
14 "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted."---NASB

Bob Jones Teaches & Preaches Tithing as if 10% of your income is due to their coffers, of course in Jesus name. Not because it is true, they use a bunch of Bible verses out of context of course. Some of them say, Well it is not a commandement anymore but you need to do it anyway. REALLY? Why? So they can have the big Jets Big fancy Bus, Big Church Buildings & everything else that is not depicted in the scripture as a necessity for Christ. If they didn't lie & just said give as the Holy Spirit leads you to & what ever they received they were not only greatful, but never complained & if they could for once live within God's will themselves for a change, would they ever have to lie about tithing? No! The answer is no. But, it is okay if they lie to you after all they are trying to do Gods will. Really? I I thought God supplied all our needs? Isn't that what you hear preached to the crowd from the CEO's, I mean Pastors? If the Churches today followed what Christ said, which is, sale all you have & give it to the poor & follow me. If Pastor's did do God's real will & show us we should do that same truth, maybe 100 times more people would be saved from Hell. That's not the purpose, No, see Empires need lots of cash. The needy get only 3% from IFB churches & God said all.

I believe if we study carefully, we would see large differences between the prosperity theology of today and the Protestant work ethic of the reformation. For instance, prosperity theology can not even define the gospel of the NT that it professes to believe. It is also interesting that prosperity theology is predominantly in Pentecostal churches. This is not an accident but one of a number of consequences to the errors of this movement.

The prosperity gospel accounts for why there are more Christians in the richest 200 people in the world than any other faith, and of these Christians the majority are prosperity gospel preachers who really can speak from experience about the God of the prosperity gospel
