Mark Driscoll Defends Celebrating Easter With Christ and the Easter Bunny

Mark Driscoll

Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Wash., recently wrote in an editorial that Christians who rail against other believers for partaking in non-religious Easter traditions are comparable to "those who murdered Jesus."

"Some Christians, rather than celebrate the fact that a day that was once devoted to the celebration of a pagan god and is now devoted to Jesus, wish to be the conscience police and go around telling everyone how they should stop having fun and celebrating because of the day's origins. If someone has a conscience issue with celebrating the holiday, they should abstain, but to rail against kids eating candy and having fun sounds more like the religious types who murdered Jesus than the kids who hung out with him," Driscoll wrote.

He continued by explaining that he and his wife tell their five children that the Easter bunny, along with Santa Claus, are not real, but ...

I'd rather drink for free at the fountain of life. It's a life-giving stream.

Not like that killer-fluid I used to drink between 1968-1979. Very near saw me into hell, and that without remedy!

But the Lord has mercy on all who repent and turn around, trusting in the Saviour of sinners, who "died for the ungodly", that they might be saved and found in their right mind, instead of stupidly travelling the self-destruct route for want of something real and exciting!

John 7:37-39
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Ahhhhh.....that's better!

Driscoll is right in my opinion. There isn't anything wrong with the Easter Bunny and candy on Easter Sunday. Almost all adults experienced this on Easter. This is a beautiful Holiday that everyone should acknowledge by honoring Jesus and making sure all children should know but it is nice to give children treats and let them have their fun. Give me a break on discussing paganism!!

"Redeem" pagan holidays? Chapter and verse Pastor Driscoll.

This is what the Jews were put into captivity for; embracing the pagan traditions and worship and mixing them with God appointed traditions and worship. Luther made this same mistake with the Christmas tree.

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15).
For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

we probably should stop using the pagan term, Easter, and use the term, "Resurrection Sunday," instead. Ah, yes, for any wondering Jews who happened on this site we hope your Passover Seder is going well also.

Part of the ISBE definition:

"EASTER:
es'-ter (pascha, from Aramaic paccha' and Hebrew pecach, the Passover festival):

The English word comes from the Anglo-Saxon Eastre or Estera, a Teutonic goddess to whom sacrifice was offered in April, so the name was transferred to the paschal feast.…"

Psalm 22
1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations.
30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath do

Wonderful song sung at service this morn:

Worship Christ, the Risen King!

Rise O Church and lift your voices
Christ has conquered death and hell
Sing as all the earth rejoices
Resurrection anthems swell
Come and worship come and worship
Worship Christ the Risen King

See the tomb where death had laid Him
Empty now its mouth declares
Death and I could not contain Him
For the throne of life He shares
Come and worship come and worship
Worship Christ the Risen King

Hear the earth protest and tremble
See the stone removed with pow'r
All hell's minions may assemble
But cannot withstand His hour
He has conquered He has conquered
Christ the Lord the Risen King

Doubt may lift its head to murmur
Scoffers mock and sinners jeer
But the truth proclaims a wonder
Thoughtful hearts receive with cheer
He is risen He is risen
Now receive the Risen King

We acclaim Your life O Jesus
Now we sing Your victory
Sin or hell may seek to seize us
But Your conquest keeps us free
Stand in triumph stand in triumph
Worship Christ the Risen King
