Obama Calls for More Redistribution of Wealth, Declaring: ‘I Am My Brother’s Keeper’

In a campaign speech in Vermont on Friday, President Barack Obama referenced the biblical story of Cain and Abel in condemning what he called "you're-on-your-own economics" while arguing for a number of policies that involve government transferring wealth from one group of citizens to another—including providing public schools with more money for teachers’ salaries, freezing the interest rates on government-backed student loans, supporting companies developing biofuels, electric batteries and wind and solar power and funding scientists who are doing research on stem cells and climate change.

“I hear politicians talking about values in an election year,” Obama said. “I hear a lot about that. Let me tell you about values. Hard work, personal responsibility--those are values. But looking out for one another. That’s a value. The idea that we’re all in this together. I am my brother’s keeper. I am my ...

I'm not sure sure if all theft in the world makes up half the battle, but the other factors of what the Lord Jesus said "take heed and beware of covetousness" and what the prophet Isaiah said "to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke" must weigh equally as heavy.

Your sermons must be a real hoot with exegesis like that!

If Barry thinks he is his brothers keeper, then let him use his money to do it. But, I don't see that happening; it's cheaper for him to force us to keep his brother(s) for him.

And they tend to be EXPENSIVE, too, and not just numerous. I still remember people criticized GWB for taking lots of vacations, which he did, but I don't remember them costing very much. Most of the time he'd just fly home to his ranch and kick back.

Hopefully Obama won't be able to spin the current crises as wonderfully as FDR did the Great Depression to get himself re-elected. I'm hopeful that enough of the US public is now willing to change the "change" come November.

We'll see.

SJ John, maybe Obama thinks he is our brother, so we should keep him in the style to which he has been accustomed? I don't think we can afford all the vacations, though.

Forgive me for once again using my own family as an example but my mentally ill sister qualifies for social security even though our family is more than wealthy enough to care for her ourselves. Instead of pooling our resources to help her directly we pay taxes which support her SS payments. Dad likes it that way because as he says he's "payed into the system" and now wants at least some of his money back. Meanwhile the rest of us are "relieved" of any burden to care for our sister since we've been conditioned to accept government assistance in this case.

If anything, "redistribution" does NOT help us be "our brother's keeper" but rather causes the heart over time to grow colder, not warmer.

I wonder how well he has kept his half-brothers and sister in Africa? I wonder how taking care of your family morphs into government mandating paying someone else's way with stolen money? He misuses Scripture, while ignoring "Thou shalt not steal." Isn't stealing what happens when you take what belongs to someone else?

The entire article should be read to get insight into this man's mind. It is astounding how one person could be so wrong about so many things, from history to economics, fron biblical literacy to science. It will be disastrous if he is allowed a second term to continue his promise to "fundamentally transform" the country. Think of what the fundamental basics of the country are, then decide whether some politician who wants to take them away, should be given a second term, or a one way ticket to Chicago.

My My, I am somewhat surprised though I should be that many Republicans who are affluent support protecting the riches, in some instances ill-gotten wealth, of the extremely rich. It was something like how many poor southern dirt farmers supported slavery, when they themselves had no slaves before the Civil War.
The Atlantic wrote:
But even as a guiding principle, it polls spectacularly well. More than 20 polls consulted by Bruce Bartlett reveal support for higher taxes in a deficit reduction deal, and the public prefers those higher taxes to disproportionately affect the rich. The White House can't run on a healthy recovery yet, and it won't run on spending cuts. The alternative is to turn 2012 into a referendum on the role of government and the responsibilities of the wealthy.

Not so with them who indeed abide in their calling in Christ, who are Israel, Jerusalem, and Zion, according to all the Scriptures.

John 4:23 "But the hour cometh, and now is..."

Isaiah 4:4 "When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning."

1 Pet. 4:17 "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God..."

1 Cor.10:24 "Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth."

"Karl Marx believed that the problem with the socialism of his day was that it did not deal with economic issues. He proposed that his new (communist) economic system, which called for redistribution of wealth, was more equitable. But it is clear that this system does not work either, at least in part because it requires people to be altruistic. Unfortunately, working for the benefit of others over the self is not in harmony with the current state of human nature. Marx advanced a secular solution to what is a spiritual problem." (Wilf Hey)
