Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams Is Stepping Down
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams is stepping down at the end of the year, calling an end to a tumultuous decade as leader of a global Anglican Communion that has been sharply divided over sexuality and gender.
Williams, 61, renowned for his formidable learning, announced Friday he will take up a new post as master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.
“I would hope that my successor has the constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros,” he said.
The Anglican/Episcopalian church died many decades ago.
Dave Shiflett wrote: It is commonly understood that the election of the Reverend Gene Robinson, an openly gay priest, to be bishop of the diocese of New Hampshire was undertaken in clear opposition to traditional church teaching and Scripture. What is often left unsaid is that this is hardly the first time tradition has been trounced. The Reverend Gene Robinson’s sexual life was an issue and was accommodated, just as the Episcopal Church earlier found a way to embrace bishops who believe that Jesus is no more divine, at least in a supernatural sense, than Bette Midler.
"Dr Williams is a liberal. In normal circumstances he would have sided with the gay lobby, but was unable to do so because of the strength of contrary opinion in Africa and elsewhere, and so ended up sitting on the fence – and pleasing no one"
"To those outside the Church this indecisive obsession with what seemed pretty marginal issues was often perplexing. Critics forget that, unlike the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury is unable to lay down the law in theological and moral terms, and is among his fellow Anglican bishops only first among equals." The Church of England has planted seeds of its own destruction and leadership like that of Rowan Williams is part of the problem. Women in the pulpit is unBiblical. The acceptance of homosexuality is unBiblical. These seeds have sown the seeds of Liberalism as leaven. 1Cor 5:6 "Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?" The leaven in this case is Liberalism and its too late to purge that one out of the CofE.
I had to listen to Rowan Williams preach a sermon with about 1 bible verse in it. At the inauguration of Canterbury Christchurch University. I so wanted to preach the Gospel to him. I do not know how they class him as a intellect. He has wrecked the Anglican Church. The Anglican Church is dying in England. Gay bishops and other things.
Hopefully they will put in someone like John Sentamu who actually believes the bible and does not secretly practice things like Rowan William does behind close doors. What Rowan Williams did to Canterbury Cathedral was horrific as I lived in Canterbury. It is a graveyard and a tourist spot.
The ecumenical movement is thriving over here we I am against. We need Bishops like J C Ryle again.
The archbishop should also had mentioned his successor should be as Christian as the apostle Paul. All too many Anglican archbishops have been just about as Christian as the antichrists who lord over the Romish church, The Pope and the Papacy One should at least hope that his successor has the qualifications of an elder which few in the Roman Catholic-lite church with its archbishops perhaps never had.
"The faith of Anglicans is founded in the scriptures, the traditions of the apostolic church, the apostolic succession – "historic episcopate" and the early Church Fathers...." Anglicanism
'...the State Church, which the great reformers had planted, and which some of them had watered with their blood, presented the spectacle which went far to justify the sarcasm of an eminent writer, that she possessed "A Popish Liturgy, a Calvinistic Creed, and an Arminian Clergy."' from the, The Down Grade
