Baptist ethicist on mandate: We'd rather go to jail, pay fines
The Obama administration's mandate that health insurance plans cover contraceptives that can cause abortions harms not only Baptists and other religious adherents but all Americans, two Southern Baptist ethicists told a congressional panel Feb. 16.

Their comments came during a four-and-a-half-hour hearing on the federal rule's impact on freedom of religion and conscience before the Oversight and Government Reform Committee of the House of Representatives. Ten representatives of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish bodies spoke in opposition to the mandate and what critics describe as its lack of sufficient religious and conscience protections for houses of worship, religious institutions and individuals.

C. Ben Mitchell of Union University told the committee the rule "is an unconscionable intrusion by the state into the consciences of American citizens." ...

I notice Union University (one of the complainants) is hosting Peter Leithart as a guest speaker. He is now part of Doug Wilson's little empire after leaving PCA. There is something worse than even free birth control: preaching another gospel. When will Christians show as much discernment in theology as in sexual ethics?

Seminaries (an idea established by Rome) have been almost a complete disaster for the church, so I have little sympathy for them.

You can't be for Sola Fide AND Pro-Contraception.

"Historically, the church has viewed contraception as evil. The Church Fathers and early Reformers were consistent in their opposition to birth control. Martin Luther said that contraception was "far more atrocious than incest or adultery" and John Calvin considered it "doubly monstrous" because it "extinguish[es] the hope of the race" and acts "to kill before he is born the hoped-for offspring."

"Most Protestant denominations shared this view until the 1930s. However today, few denominations---whether Mainline or Evangelical---actively oppose the practice."
