Why Churches Should Resurrect Sunday Evening Services
Kevin DeYoung, senior pastor at University Reformed Church, recently revealed a few reasons why congregants should consider "keeping ... going to ... or even starting" an evening service at the church on The Gospel Coalition website.

"Having an evening service keeps the Lord's day the Lord's Day," the Michigan preacher noted. "Without the evening service, I find it too easy to treat Sunday worship like an hour to get done at the beginning of the day."

"The temptation to squeeze worship into the margins of life is even more pronounced when we finish our worship 'requirement' by 8 pm on Saturday evening," he added. ...

I would like to know the Bible reason for meeting twice on Sunday. Is this a only a man made tradition?

You are quite wrong there Jim. He broke the additional demands of the Pharisees. If he had broken the Sabbath commandment as given by God, he would be a sinner!! He, as Lord of the Sabbath, was showing them that they had not understood it!

Your citing Gal 3 is of no consequence because you are assuming that this relates to the Moral law, when this is quite clearly referring to the ceremonial law!

We are not "under law" in the sense of its demands of obedience for our "justification" nor, being justified by faith, are we any longer under its condemnation. But I deny that we are not bound to do what is right**(see note) viz Our duty of love to God and to our neighbour. Even our Lord made this much clear. And since the Sabbath commandment is included in the moral law, we still have to honour it!

NOTE:- **Such a denial is antinomianism!!

Galatians 3
23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith.
25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.---NASB

The first day of the week ran from sundown Saturday to sundown Sunday. The only midnight was therefore midnight on Saturday night.

Jim I think you are mistaken about the ten commandments. I don't ever remember Jesus saying that only the specific commands reiterated should be followed, in fact, I think he had some scathing remarks about those who taught others to disregard commandments. "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19 NASB)
The 10 commandments are all moral in nature and were never cancelled. The fact that we have 9 mentioned in the NT should lead us to conclude that they all still apply and not the faulty reasoning of some that somehow one was done away without specific mention. If they insist on this, the onus of proof is on them.

The mistake some make is to cancel the Sabbath command because they see no moral aspect to it. But that is a blemish in their thinking and nothing to do with what the Bible teaches.

Yes,Rafael, unfortunately some churches to placate legalists do have church services on Saturday--which is the Sabbath. Again I would point out the sermon, Legalism is Shadow, Christ is Substance. only those commandments, of The Ten Commandments, that Christ you reiterated in the New Testament are to be carried out by Christians. So, Sabbath observance can be a stumbling block for Christians, because we have Freedom from the Mosaic Law.

Does anyone know the commandments? Keep the Sabbath day. Now that means to worship that whole day. The problem here is that it isn't convinces for us because were selfish humans that only think about ourselves.

Why in the OT there was a morning and evening sacrifice. Now I now that that dispensation is gone, but the pattern should be instructive nevertheless.

Sorry, but the best I could come up with is this:

Romans 14:5,6
"One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks."

Not the Dr. There is no Scripture stating to my knowledge, that there has to be a Sunday night Service. Although, in Acts20:7 it does say,Paul preached until midnight. If we have truly been regenerated by the Holy Sprit, we should have a great desire,to learn, and to have fellowship with are Christian Brothers, and Sisters. We should be growing in are Saitification.

Not the dr. Here you go. Though I wonder why the incessant need for verses. But here. "And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40 NASB)

Apparently, the church in Jerusalem did not meet at all on Sunday, either once or twice. They were together all the time.

What happend to the fellowship of the brethren? What happend to old camp revivals and meetings? Forget Fridays for me!! I can't wait till Sunday comes around, for corporate worship! Now days all you see, is your pastor watching his clock, so he doesnt miss half time! What a disgrace to the Lords day!

I can see the benefit of meeting 3, 4, or even more times a week. I would love an evening service, but I think Mike is right. The church in America is worldly and weak.
