Planned Parenthood tops $1 billion in assets

The nationâ€™s largest abortion provider topped $1 billion in total net assets in 2009-2010, its first time reaching that mark, according to Planned Parenthoodâ€™s latest annual report.

The report, released Friday, is sure to rekindle Republican lawmakersâ€™ efforts to defund the organization in 2012. Five of the GOP presidential candidates have also signed a pledge to defund Planned Parenthood.

Almost half of the groupâ€™s annual revenue â€” 46 percent â€” comes from taxpayers in the form of grants, contracts and Medicaid payments, according to an analysis by the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List. ...
