After 400 years, is technology rendering KJV redundant?

More than four centuries ago, the invention of the printing press revolutionized the written word and made it possible for the then-brand new King James Version of the Bible to become the most widely-distributed book on the planet and the definitive translation of the scriptures.

That book, complete with its thees and thous and strange idioms and expressions transplanted from another era, had a profound and unprecedented influence on the way English-speaking people thought, spoke and viewed the world.

Now, as English-speaking Christians mark the 400th anniversary of the KJV's birth in 1611, technology is once again dramatically changing the way the Bible is read and interacted with, changing the very way Christians interpret their faith.

"'Please tap to Matthew 1:1" may be what we hear from the pulpit some day,'" said Mark Stephenson, author of "Web-Empowered Ministry" and a consultant who ...

Tony Cisneros, I really don't know what you're latest rant has to do with this thread? As a great piece of literature, the AV, won't be redundant, Part II: The Reign of the King James (The Era of Elegance) but as a good Bible--it never was. Part III: From the KJV to the RV (from Elegance to Accuracy). There was a better Bible in English made 50 years before it, The Geneva Bible Of 1560.

Tony Cisneros, you may be surprised to know that paper does disintegrate. I have an old AV that I was planning to take the maps out of and it does have some helpful study aids in it also. It was printed in the 1920s and the paper has so much acid in it that those yellow pages are nearly impossible to read.

I like printed books but I certainly like my computer Bible programs For example, the James Strong's concordance is easy to integrate with the AV – which is certainly needs.

Well, Neil, I got that out the way and to more important things. I think you can see through both the old and new Testaments that the marriage ceremony was a religious rite before it became a secular interest. So the "assemblies of God," participated in marriages. Of course this has nothing to do with Catholic priests, q.v., The Scandal of the Catholic Priesthood.anyway, not-your-Pope for a Christian, Returning to Rome is not an option--for a Christian.

I remember reading a story similar to the following link about a little over a year ago, that predicted digital e-ink and "paper" to be cheaper than the real thing, even disposable.
cheap e-ink

I should resist the following snark... but maybe the KJV is best left on paper it never changes thankfully, however put the new versions on digital ink so they can be updated every week to keep up with the changes.

Seriously tho' cheap e-ink, large fonts, built in dictionary, and audio reading, plus the light weight, and commentaries plus a "super concordance" do make a very appealing package. However I find myself looking for the oldest printed KJV sometimes to verify the e-version didn't change.

This begs my question: what Biblical role do church officers have regarding marriage? You supplied no answer.

Jim, marriage is of interest to God, and so are a lot of other things which church leaders have no role in, such as negotiating contracts. So this is no answer to my question, either.

Marriage in particular and Gender Issues are an interest to God because he refers to them either directly or indirectly in both Testaments of the Bible. My Pastor Gil Rugh even has a downloadable booklet, To Tie the Knot or Not: A Biblical Study of Marriage and the Single Life about it.

Communist countries when they started wanted to abolish formal marriage, but they later found out an even anti-religion state has a stake in normal (man/woman) stable marriages and they started to try to bring about more formal unions after their experiments with "laissez faire" sexual arrangements.

Whence the Biblical warrant for either of these? Considering how much churches have fussed about marriage over the centuries, the silence of the OT & NT about what role & authority church officers have here is deafening. Did God forget something? Or has man added to what He has revealed?
So the Reformers did too much rather than too little – marriage is a civil matter out of scope for organized churches, no less than business contracts. And just as solemn, so far as vows are concerned. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of vow-keeping, whether in marriage or anything else. This is why the presence of witnesses is important.
As same-sex "marriage" becomes the picture of freedom illustrated best by slavery's severed shackles, and this gay liberty is codified into federal law, how will the Protestant movement, for the first time in its history, in-source (i.e., validate and license) holy matrimony throughout 100s of schismatic denominations and 1,000s of independent churches?

Ah, you mean the nonsense called the The Apocrypha? Though officially it was suppose to be in the AV, it got dropped just like the Preface. The first action an excellent idea, the last one a bad idea.

The Roman Catholic Bible has other problems besides the above about the uninspired writings it has in it. The Imprimatur is very handy for Christians, this is a book that should not only be banned in Boston, but of course not in any Christian's home, since that is a mark of falsehood.

If the Protestant movement were a church it would maintain its own imprimatur and holy matrimony licenses.

However, since it's a mere movement it has to sub-contract its Bible translation copyrights and "marriage" (two-of-any-kind) licenses to the government.

Not good foresight on behalf of the Reformers. Proper planning prevents poor performance.

Blame Congress, Neil. Copyright Duration oh, and the Disney corp., for wanting to hold the copyright to Mickey Mouse forever, if they can.

Authorized King James Version, being recognized as the political tool that it was, was not accepted all that quickly. The Geneva Bible Of 1560 was no doubt the Bible of the Pilgrims and the Puritans for example, but I have never denied the historical importance of the AV, Part II: The Reign of the King James (The Era of Elegance) nor the need for it to be revised, Part III: From the KJV to the RV (from Elegance to Accuracy).

When toddlers were allowed to "read" books on iPads and then exposed to the same book in printed form, their common response to the real book:

"Mommy, it's broken."

The real books didn't move, shake, buzz, shimmy, flash and shine when they touched it.

Recall that the printing press was a novelty 500 yrs. ago, & that it is possible many valuable hand-copied manuscripts have been lost forever because they seemed old-fashioned to owners of newfangled printed books.

The KJV is still under Crown Copyright; letters patent authorizing its printing are unenforceable outside the UK:
www.kingjamesbible.info/king-james-bible-copyright-status.php
However, given the proliferation of free digital KJVs these days, the copyright “cow” has left the barn by now. I would say the Geneva Bible is a better candidate for a truly uncopyrighted translation; it only fell into disuse because of its legal “persecution” by Archbishop Laud.

I agree with Scott; why can't copyrights expire like patents? That would be a good subject for debate among legal eagles.

The irony is that the copyright restrictions on modern Bible versions have kept the KJV alive and well in the new century, since it's the only version of the Bible you can put on a handheld device (or in software like E-sword) without paying a copyright holder an excessive amount of money to get the rights to use their text.

And it's not just the KJV, I've seen this with other texts. Since almost every edition of a public domain text created since 1930 is still under copyright, the world is starting to basically ignore the entire 20th century and use 19th century editions of texts, which are out of copyright, for digital editions.

The reality of all-but-perpetual copyright has basically caused a lost century of scholarship, because people are ignoring works produced in the 20th century which will be under copyright likely in perpetuity.

Copyright holders are hoist on their own petard, to use a 16th century phrase.
