Supreme Court rules against church meetings at public schools

Bronx Household of Faith

The Supreme Court has rejected an evangelical church's plea to overturn New York City's ban on after-hours religious worship services at public schools.

The justices on Monday left in place a federal appeals court ruling that upheld the city's policy.

The Bronx Household of Faith is an evangelical Christian church that has held Sunday services at P.S. 15 in the Bronx since 2002. The church services have been allowed to continue pending the outcome of the school's lawsuit against the city.

Found your country on the freedom of religion?

You'll end with a nation that proclaims atheism and later Islam.

Found your country on one religion?

You'll kill that religion and end with a nation that proclaims atheism and later Islam.

How does Christianity win with this natural downgrade to atheism and Islam?

False doctrine is worse than atheism. If school administrators have not the discernment to know the difference perhaps that is best. I would rather my children be taught by an atheist than a Roman Catholic pedophile heretic.

Dirk, this may be that many of those who say they worship God actually worship the same god that runs the schools---thinking they have the best of both worlds, but essentially having neither.

Public Schools are the churches for the religion of secular humanism. Assembling in a school would be akin to assembling in a mosque or synagogue.
Those who think schools are not churches are akin to those who bow and pray to Mary statues and think it is not worship.

A school is a building, and off-hours is nothing more. Same as those places we call churches.
It does make you wonder how a court would find this a problem, considering how in the early years of the country, the same building used as school was often used as the meeting house on Sunday.
Presidents used to worship on the Lord's Day in the U.S. House of Representatives. My, how things have changed.

Thanks John, I didn't read the decision or anything. We live in a small rural community. There is even a manger scene in our county courthouse yard. I don't believe anyone in our community would complain about the church having services in the local school. I believe that by letting other organizations use the school and keeping the church out is a bad decision bordering on discrimination. I hope they can find a new place to worship!!!

The title is misleading. The Supreme Court decided not to rule on the case, which left a lower court's ruling in place. But it does contradict earlier Court decisions.

There might be less confusion if there weren't the error of thinking "public" was synonymous with "state."

Well that Supreme Court ruling only affects New York City, New York and no other municipality in the United States.
