Resurrecting America's historic apples

In the foothills of North Carolina's Blue Ridge mountains, Lee Calhoun is resurrecting a piece of American history.

"Perhaps 100, 150 years ago there were 6,000 apple varieties that were widely grown," said Calhoun. "And now that's dwindled down to a few hundred."

Calhoun is pruning back the hands of time in an effort to save old Southern apples.

Apples are as American as, well, apple pie.

Sorry, Neil, I have to agree with you again, I know how you hate that!

I have stopped buying apples at the grocery stores and I'm not talking about organic ones, which I never put out the money for, because those apples were making me sick, even when I ran them under a faucet and wiped them off. So, thanks for reminding me, I think. How can you tell organic foods are pesticide free?

Hold your horses, O food Puritans - what if they use pesticide or chemical fertilizers? I read nothing about their being certified organic by the FDA, or even by the grower (some do so w/o paying for expensive certification).
