Town Clerk Won't Issue Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Ledyard Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti, who gained national attention for refusing to issue a same-sex marriage license, told a crowded room of college students and community members Wednesday night that she was not going to back down from her beliefs.

â€œThis is who I am and I canâ€™t do it,â€ Belforti, a Republican, said during the question and answer presentation hosted by Wells College in Aurora.

Belforti said her Christian beliefs are the reason she refused in August to sign a marriage license for a same-sex couple. The state enacted the Marriage Equality Act in July. Belfortiâ€™s refusal gained statewide and national exposure from The New York Times, Huffington Post and other media outlets. ...
