ADAM & EVE (R. Albert Mohler Jr.): Clarifying what is at stake
Recent evangelical discussion concerning Adam and Eve has served at least one good purpose -- it has helped to clarify what is theologically at stake in the debate. The recent report by National Public Radio alerted the larger secular culture to the debate, but the debate is hardly new.

What is new, however, is the candid admission on the part of some that the denial of a historical Adam requires a new understanding of the Bible's basic story -- and thus of the Gospel as well.

By the way, those who try to deny that Genesis requires the affirmation of a historic Adam as a real and singular human individual (arguing, for example, that the Hebrew word translated "Adam" means only "the man") must face the fact that the Genesis narrative clearly presents Adam as a singular individual who acts, speaks, marries, reproduces and is listed even in the genealogy of Jesus. Hebrew vocabulary offers no escape ...

jpw, I agree with what I quoted here. I agree we are to be involved in the preservation of our own and our brothers health. However there are factors you are omitting that are equally as necessary a part of the picture. Man by Adamic nature or original sin has "forfeited his right to all the outward blessings of this life, and deserves to be wholly deprived of them by God, and have them cursed to us in the use of them, because neither these temporal blessings, nor our efforts to attain then by our merit or industry will sustain us in this life." WCF A to Q 194

Thus we pray "Give us this day our daily bread." When in response to this petition God grants us the ability to procure them, we are then instructed to sanctify them to our use by the word of God and prayer. I hear none stressing this?

What you suggest is good and increasingly necessary but will you burden those who God has not burdened with guilt, if they are not for some reason in God's providence unable. i.e. weather, blight, or insufficient funds for pricey heritage seeds & plants that are not tampered with or other responsibilities of a greater u

the discussion over Adam and Eve is essentially a debate between humanism and a belief in God's sovereignty.

It is played out in post-modern science that is so convinced of itself that it no longer requires the scientific method to prove itself.

This is the beginning point and defines how Genesis is read.

A clear reading of Genesis, you will find that God created the world, including the first two humans, male and female, and that the world was then broken by sin, death came by this.

In His wonderful mercy, eternal life for those who are forgiven, has no death.

The consquences are future (oure eternal state) and our present (compromised food, air, water because we think that we are "evolving" and cannot see the destructiveness of eating genetically modified foods and chemicals, even with the evidence all around us).

There is even mercy in the illness this culture is taking upon itself through its evolutionary humanism. This mercy being that in it, a story is being told, of the foolishness of man to forget and ignore the very One who made the Creation and has the wisdom to teach, protect, and instruct us.

All that teaching we are just an accidental blob of chemical reactions will do is bring on more illness, loss of IQ, etc.

"When you read the Bible (especially Genesis), do you read it as if it's a news article or as rich instructive literature?"
When I read any part of the Bible, including Genesis, I read it with the mind that it is God's word. That if I hope to comprehend it, it must be by the same Spirit that inspired it to give me a heart to understand it. Thus to trust in, and in trusting seek the Lord for his wisdom in it, and not to lean on my (i.e., man's flawed imaginations of what is logic and reason) own understanding is the course best set for those who would know and comprehend the word of God.
It would be kind of odd to take a genealogical record of someone and say that they are all historical characters, except one. Which one of those listed in Genesis 5 is to be taken as a literal person? Which person then taken as literal is said to be born of non-literal person? Just Adam?
What is actually amazing is all the scholars who don't appear to see the obvious: what should we call all those who born from the first man, who God named Adam? Perhaps we might call them after their first father-Adam. Maybe its something to obvious for scholars to comprend, but that only children would understand.

Don't forget OHM, you Roman Catholics do not believe the Bible because you can't. The papal antichrist has deceived and beguiled you so that your heretical human Roman Catholic Traditions have become more important than God's Word.

To the 'real' Christian Sola Scriptura is obvious because we have the Holy Spirit indwelling, therefore the Bible IS THE WORD OF GOD from cover to cover. (KJV of course)

These are the words of a guy called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and are also from the Bible.
Matt 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."

We Christians believe in Jesus, - rather than the Pope. This is Biblical Christianity - WITHOUT Roman Catholic Traditions which obviously deny the Word of God.

To echo Joe. Very simple!
There is a big differnce between no knowing something and disbelieveing something. The 5 Solas? You remember one of them don't you Sola Scriptura.

Why is it important to you to believe that Adam and Eve's existence was not literal? Why won't you even consider the posotions of the best Bible scholars throughout history?

How did Jesus view the book of Genesis?

John 8
58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

Matthew 8
11 "And I say to you, that many shall come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven;

Matthew 19
3 And some Pharisees came to Him, testing Him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause at all?"
4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read, that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,
5 and said, 'FOR THIS CAUSE A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, AND SHALL CLEAVE TO HIS WIFE; AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'?
6 "Consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."---NASB

He took Genesis literally.

OHM,

Obviously you have a point. Most men in history didn't even have the Bible, and I'm sure that they were saved by God with a shallow understanding of His plan. I don't know about Joe and Frank, but I'm not suggesting that you need to have a total knowledge of God's plan in order to be redeemed. But, that's not to say that we think it is ok to intentionally change the Gospel. That's what this article was all about. The Gospel requires man to be in a fallen state (i.e. man fell at some point in time).

Is believing certain facts about Adam & Eve now an essential of the faith?

Does this mean the 5 Solas are now insufficient? Must one also believe that the DNA-laden bones of Adam & Eve were buried some 6,000 years ago to be saved?

There is no way to see Adam as allegory. Joe and Frank are both correct, you can't be arbitrary in picking and choosing. There is only one possible out- Adam sinned in a federal sense, just like Christ redeemed in a federal sense, but Adam was no more at the beginning of history than Christ was at the end of history (for his redemptive work, not the Second Coming). But, I don't even think that's possible... see Consider 1 Cr 15:45:
"And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a quickening spirit."

If we can't understand Adam to be the first man, then all the Scriptures become a total mystery. Why even bother having a Bible if you can't really understand what the message is all about? That would make God a poor author, which I doubt very much.

BioLogos and Brian Maclaren may as well move on and start or join some totally new/different religion. These men are way more off base then even the Gnostics that John wrote about in his letters.

Is our salvation predicated on Adam's and Eve's bones literally being buried somewhere or on Christ alone through faith by grace alone?
If the First Couple were vital for faith, why are Adam & Eve omitted from every creed?
Very simple. If the First Adam was allegorical, and the fall fiction, then the second Adam (Christ)and his death would either be allegorical and/or unecessary. The need for the Atonement is predicated on the fact that a real hisorical person, who was the first man, and all of us proceeding from him, and partaking of his fallen nature, were in need of one perfect sustitute.

As to why Adam was not mentioned in any confession of faith; if a confession were to mention everything, it would be the size of the Bible itself. Also, confessions are a guide, and not infallible revelations from God.

Your comment makes absolutely no sense at all; why would you do that when you obviously are aware of what you are saying and the ramifications of what you are saying. Are you trying to draw people away from their faith in scripture? My guess is it won't work with those that post on this site. Please understand my comment is not meant to be unkind, but if you read the article and can still say what you said, then something is wrong. You know the Roman Catholics say the same thing that you just did? Adam and Eve were literally the first humans; the universe was created in 6 literal days; and Jesus literally died for the sins of the world. Don't pick and choose!
