Researchers Expose Cunning Online Tracking Service That Can’t Be Dodged
Researchers at U.C. Berkeley have discovered that some of the net’s most popular sites are using a tracking service that can’t be evaded — even when users block cookies, turn off storage in Flash, or use browsers’ “incognito” functions.

The service, called KISSmetrics, is used by sites to track the number of visitors, what the visitors do on the site, and where they come to the site from — and the company says it does a more comprehensive job than its competitors such as Google Analytics.

But the researchers say the site is using sneaky techniques to prevent users from opting out of being tracked on popular sites, including the TV streaming site Hulu.com. ...

From what I understand, this tracking still requires scripting to be enabled. Firefox + AdBlock Plus + NoScript should stop it. The difference here is that all the scripting runs on the site itself, not from a third-party site (like Google Analytics/Urchin does). This means that if you needed to run scripts on the site that used this tracking, you'd have to enable scripting (it's either all or nothing) and the tracking would work again, but then if you were using a site to buy something, the site would already have your personal information anyway.

What I do is disable ALL scripting on all sites, and enable this only when necessary. So this has never tracked me, unless it's a site that I already do business with anyway in which case it doesn't matter.
