Top Scholar on Hell: Rob Bell Is Right, Punishment Not Forever
One of the world’s foremost scholars on hell says he agrees with Rob Bell, that a loving God cannot allow people to burn and writhe in pain forever after they die.

Edward William Fudge, the author of The Fire That Consumes: A Biblical and Historical Study of the Doctrine of Final Punishment, is an advocate of the annihilationist view of hell. He believes that hell is real and people are tortured in hell. But unlike the traditional view, he holds that the pain is temporary and those in hell eventually cease to exist.

“This has to do with the character of God and the way people view God’s character,” explained Fudge to The Christian Post on Wednesday. “The God who loves the world so much that He gave his only son so believers would not perish but have eternal life is then going to turn around and throw billions of them into something resembling a lake of volcanic lava and make it so they cannot ...

Thus, he was confused.
He was confused by the book of James, too. Hmmm, I guess he wasn't a perfect man.

Where does the Bible say that a member of any one of these groups, who upon death, will -- according to Scripture -- "not know anything" but -- in your words -- "spend eternity [with] Satan"?
Why would one have amnesia upon death yet sentenced to an eternity with Satan?
Sill confused.
You will always be confused if you ignore the teachings of the Bible, so I recommend you spend more time reading through the Bible in a consistent manner, beginning with the New Testament, which has all the answers you need. And if you approach it with an open mind and a submissive will, God will assist you. A good place to start would be Luke's Gospel, in which you will find the story of the rich man and Lazarus, very telling concerning what life is like after physical death. The verse in Ecclesiastes which you quoted needs to be understood in light of the setting and who was writing it and why he was writing it, and what state he was in when he wrote it.

Totally Confused may I suggest that you listen to the sermon, The Last Judgment from which,
Gil Rugh said or, wrote:
An overview of the four judgments in Scripture concludes with that final appearance of all unbelievers before Christ as He sits on His throne. This throne described as great and white is set up for the judgment of all unbelievers without exception or exclusion.

The last resurrection in Scripture will have preceded this judgment so that all unbelievers will stand individually before Christ. Their deeds will testify against them and their guilt will be confirmed by their names not appearing in the book of life. Their works being a manifestation of their character will be judged to determine the extent and degree of punishment. The absence of their name from the book of life excludes them from eternal life, sealing their eternal destiny as hell. This is described as the second death. They will be eternally separated from God in hell, described as the place of eternal burning and torment.

Satan and all the angels that followed him in his rebellion will have preceded unbelievers in going to hell where their eternal torment will have already begun.

Revelation 20:14 "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
a) How does spiritual fire work, Mike?

b) The finality of the lake of fire provides the answer, Mike.
No more Satan.
No more Hell.
No more death.

Does this sermon mention the importance of harmonizing the scriptures, of not ripping one scripture out in isolation from the rest of scriptures and building a religion on it?

Or does this sermon endorse "dispensationalism" which teaches that God keeps changing his mind and changing the rules and that only a few sections of a few epistles in the New Testament apply to today's Christian (except if convenient to wrest verses elsewhere when they agree with the preconceived dogmas).

As to the idea that nothing in the Bible is allegorical, if that is true, then where do you get your imminent rapture doctrines, if not from redefining words and reading mystical meanings into passages and disavowing many other passages in a similar way (ie by redefining words and turning the Bible into a book of secret codes)

As with virtually every doctrine: Is a passage to be interpreted literally or figuratively?
It's all in the mind of the interpreter.
And if there are 5 persons in a room independently writing down their interpretations, we'll often get 5-6 different interpretations for most any verse.
Since the doctrine of Hell is complex (involving several verses), wouldn't one expect many, not one or only a few, interpretations?
That's just YOUR interpretation. I believe Hell is Real!!
