Until 1950s, the King James Version was 'the Bible'
The King James Version of the Bible, first published 400 years ago on May 5, 1611, is the Bible God used to give believers many of the riches of the Puritan movement, and it was the Bible at the heart of the Great Awakenings of the 18th century and the modern missionary movement, an expert noted.

"Until the 1950s, the King James Bible was 'the Bible.' It's the version that English-speaking Christians used," Michael Haykin, professor of church history and biblical spirituality at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, told Baptist Press.

"People like John Wesley and George Whitfield and Jonathan Edwards would all have used this version in their preaching. When the modern missionary movement begins with people like William Carey and Hudson Taylor and David Livingstone, this again is the Bible that's used through the 19th century," Haykin said. "It's the Bible Charles Spurgeon would have preached ...

"After completion of the Life and Morals, about 1820, Jefferson shared it with a number of friends, but he never allowed it to be published during his lifetime. The most complete form Jefferson produced was inherited by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, and was published in 1895 by the National Museum in Washington. The book was later published as a lithographic reproduction by an act of the United States Congress in 1904. For many years copies were given to new members of Congress."

Well that's one way to attempt to make all politicians unbelievers.

p.s. We are exhorted in scripture to warn against heretical teaching, such as the Roman Catholic Church, Mormonism, JW's etc. When the heretical teaching invades Bibles, it is even more important to expose it and warn fellow believers of the dangers.

Each of us can take the best of the best versions and create an optimal verse-by-verse Bible for himself.

Otherwise, rather than reading, studying and memorizing the best Bible version -- my own -- we'll be arguing about someone else's version -- and how it's wrong -- until Christ, Himself, returns.

Watch out for the new "Westminster" reference Bible shortly to become available from the Trinitarian Bible Sociey, it looks excellent. Also be aware of the new url for when their new website is launched:
http://www.tbsbibles.org

The TBS is a non-ecumenical Bible Society. It has fought off the ecumenists who tried to get it to join the "United Bible Societies" which is an ecumenical body designed to destroy the gospel at its root, namely, in God's word, by coming up with a modern greek text based on two Catholic texts, the corrupt Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, and which is utilised in the translation of most modern version of scripture. When you see the abbreviation NU know that this is:
N = Nestle/Aland greek text
U = United Bible Societies greek text
These texts agree 95% with the Textus Receptus, but it is the 5% which is corrupted or changed or altered or removed entirely, which affects Christian biblical doctrine, and which ultimately, in time, will cause the gospel of God's sovereign grace to disappear completely from the Holy Bible.

You can actually simply right click on the link which I provided in my original post and follow the menu which pops up (Save Target As) to download the booklet "ENGLISH BIBLE TRANSLATIONS: BY WHAT STANDARD?". Yes! It will save it as a PDF file. Remember, if you rename it, you can't use certain punctuation, such as colons or question marks within the title.
Thanks Alan, I will give that a try. Because once I have it in pdf I should be able to either read it anytime or print it off to read at my leisure. Not that I get much leisure these days.

The Mount Zion Bible Church looks like being a good and zealous church, and their Chapel Library has some wonderful resources. I quite like this BIBLE INSTITUTE and may even do the course. I know several folks who would like to do a systematic learning, and I think this would be excellent.

Tony,

If web-space were paper, Sermon Audio would need to charge you extra for using so much. Do you really think people read again that which you have posted more than once? You might try to restrain yourself for the sake of others. But then, we see nearly every post what you think of others.

BTW, Tony, GOD'S PERFECT WILL is this:

"And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment." 1 John 3:23

Doesn't appear that you really take God's perfect will after all...

John, thanks for the very kind words. I have been a little distracted with my daughter's courtship. It has been up and down emotionally and may end soon in failure, but better to find out now rather than after marriage. I do keep up with reading the posts, but I don't have the time or energy to participate much.
Hope your surgery went well.

After becoming a Christian and being misled by my then local church and convictions to use the NIV, I eventually went to theological college to study Greek plus various other Christian studies. On studying Greek I began to see the inaccuracies of the NIV and sought a 'true' Bible representation. This in turn led me to study the 'version' problem which has emerged in our times. Having studied and found relevant books covering the version disparities together with my Greek studies I settled on the KJV, as being the best and most accurate english Bible version.
Westcott and Hort obviously featured in those studies and referring to your post above - I can only ask, "Why should I read the works of a couple of obvious Liberal heretics?"

W&H have clearly influenced modern versions directly and through Nestle/Aland in an adverse way. I see them as servants of Satan, who like the RCC belong to a parallel 'religious' path which is false and diverts many to fallacy and error.

"And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of."

English Bible Translations, by What Standard?

I have taken this post from another thread. Just finished reading the suggested booklet. While I might feel a little more strongly than the author concerning the KJV (though I am not KJV only) I would highly recommend that all who are sincerely interested in knowing the truth concerning the translation issue read it. Note that the author focuses primarily upon the doctrinal aspect of God's Word, i.e. inspiration and providential preservation (God's part), as opposed to the difficulties of textual variants (due to man's participation).

I would also recommend the following excellent series of sermons, located here on SA, by the same author.

English Bible Translations Pt 1 , Pt 2, Pt 3

Thanks WEB!

1. Why do you keep flogging this Westcott and Hort site??? Are you an Anglican Liberal - if not a papist???
1. So that those who erroneously copy and paste and misquote Hort can see the quotes in the correct context and no more. Have you gone online elsewhere and read the quotes from original source...most of W&H books are available to read online. Why promote the accuracy of the AV and not be accurate in your own quotes re: W&H. Would you trust ANY scholarship doing such

2. I note you haven't dealt with the quotes in their context yet and I didn't say you had used that site.

3. I don't know of any liberal protestant evangelical anglicans, kindly point me to their website.

4. No I am not a RC; papist; Anglican; Arminian; Fundie Baptist or promoter of Alberto comic provider 'Chick' or anti-calvinist lady scholar Ripplinger or a KJV Onlyist as an example.

5. I use the AV as explained best here and would promote the Trinitarian Bible Society which version?

TLC, that's an excellent statement as far as it goes for "GOD's PERFECT WILL" is certainly better than my "good will".

However, there are some important things you left out in your entire message. The "good will" quote about me from you actually came from me to you from a King James Bible quote:

Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will (Philippians 1:15):

As I quoted to you here:
1. Same thread
2. 5/6/11 7:46 PM

My friend, my actual "good will" quote to you was clearly in the context of the "good will" referred to the King James Bible as anyone can see for themselves by going to 5/6/11 7:46 PM.

I trust you don't have a problem with King James Bible verses, since you like to go on about the King James Bible so much.

So why then do you call it my "good will" instead of God's "good will"? Is it incomprehensible to you the possibility that God was expressing His "good will" to you through me through what I sated in 5/6/11 7:46 PM?
