It is not far fetched to speculate that the United States has, over the past ten years, been sliding into a form of authoritarianism that retains only some aspects of the constitution and a limited rule of law. America's president can, for example, commit soldiers to combat overseas without a constitutionally mandated declaration of war by congress while it is quite possible to be detained by the authorities and locked up without any prospect of trial or opportunity to defend oneself. The government even believes it can kill American citizens based only on suspicion. I prefer to think of this transformation as the National Security State because it rests on a popular consensus that liberties must be sacrificed in exchange for greater public safety from various threats, international terrorism being the most prominent. It might just as well be called the National Warfare State as it also requires...
God-fearer: Liberals are not anti-government, they love big government. Not sure where you get your definition for political liberals from. The liberals in the USA want more and more government, which ultimately results in what this article is saying.. a National Security state or in other words a police state.
We are quickly moving toward an East German style system. "Show me your papers" "where have you been?" "where are you going?"
Has everyone heard about the PA Homeland security spying on groups of interest here in PA? Yes, the government spying on groups who committed NO crimes, but were watched with the suspicion that they might do so. Americans meeting together as our constitutional rights allow us to do, and Big Brother is watching.
So this article is spot on.
Gavel asked "how can the rule of law be limited if you are sliding into authoritarianism?
That is exactly the point. When we leave the principles of limited government and personal liberties as our founders set forth in our supreme law of the land...the constitution, then we slide into authoritarianism. We must decide as a nation, do we want liberty, or do we want the nanny state dictating to us every move we must or must not make? I say with Patrick Henry Give me liberty or give me death.
Neil wrote: "Over the past ten years"? Typical American historical nearsightedness. How about over the past century? Consider Wilson's scary WW1 regime.
John Briggs wrote: Bertrand Russell claimed that one of the great faults of the twentieth century was that it limited itself by a 'parochialism in time'.
As Solomon has said there is nothing new under the sun. If Liberals are anti-government and Conservatives are misgoverning then what are Libertarians? Historically they have been no less disconcerting. The fear of man is a snare and God has promised to deliver his people from it.
Psalm 12: 1Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men. 2They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. 3The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: 4Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? 5For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. 6The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. 8The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.
"The second key element in the National Security State is the media depiction of a threat that makes the public fearful and willing to sacrifice rights in exchange for security. This effort is aided and abetted by the government, which is the principal cheerleader for the fear mongering"
Ooooohhh Does this mean we cannot trust the honesty of politicians and the media????
So whats new?
Big Brother is coming to a socialist bureaucracy near you.

How can the rule of law be 'limited' if you are sliding into authoritarianism?
Where America is going is deeper into Liberalism, and that is anti-authority. The silly churches whose religion is Liberalism demonstrate this by rejecting the Law of Scripture for the lusts of the abomination, and the people.
2Peter 2:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
Jude 1:8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
