CHICAGO – The YMCA is now known officially as just "the Y."
The Chicago-based U.S. nonprofit announced Monday that it is changing both its logo and name to "the Y," marking its first branding change in 43 years. The switch comes after more than two years of research indicated many people don't understand what the group does. Officials with the Y say they hope the new logo will be more inviting.
The group's mission is to strengthen communities by focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
The new name applies to the group nationally, but individual locations will still be referred to as YMCAs. The transition is already under way and should be completed within five years at locations in more than 10,000 communities across the country....
"I think [most] parents will point out to you, that children are not minature adults."
Still a fail, Jim. 1st, equivocation: I don't know what you mean by "miniature adult." 2nd, induction: it's an unproven generalization which even if true, relies on opinion - most scientists surveyed believe in evolution, but that doesn't make it true. And BTW, you didn't answer my questions below.
Go read that Geisler logic text your church is hawking.
Still nonsense, Neil. I think [most] parents will point out to you, that children are not minature adults, its the parents duty of course to help children become responsible (and God willing, believing) adults. A lot of 18 year olds are not responsible, but 90% of the problem there is irresponsible parents.
Maybe well over a century ago, before Granville Stanley Hall & John Dewey.
"..children don't (usually) have the physiological maturity of an adult or the experience to comprehend as an adult has."
Unsubstantiated empirical claim. Have you studied the minds of all children to reach this conclusion? And do you imply that *no* adults have such limitations?
With God, all things are possible, but with Jim, many things are not.
Neil, when were children to treated as little adults? Again, children don't (usually) have the physiological maturity of an adult or the experience to comprehend as an adult has. The Jews may have well been wrong in treating 12/13 year-olds as adults, they set the bar too low. Luke 41 And His parents used to go to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast; 43 and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. And His parents were unaware of it, 44 but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and went a day's journey; and they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46 And it came about that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.---NASB

Good thing those strong people believed in the Christian principle of turning the other cheek.
Of course I've heard of the Talmud, Cezar. It is Jim who esteems Jewish traditions, not me. As a brief perusal of this thread might have revealed, I was only quoting in reply. Take it up with him.
"Jewish Children were not allowed to read the Book Ezekiel."
Probably for the same reason Rome banned the Bible in the vernacular. You repudiate the arbitrary authority or tradition of priests, & embrace that of rabbis, apparently. This is just the sort of humanistic legalism Christ condemned in Mark 7:13 & elsewhere.
That not everyone can understand *all* the Bible does not logically imply it should not be taught in full. Ever heard of the Holy Spirit?
Yes, Neil, it is an emphatic YES, some Scripture is not for children, Jewish Children were not allowed to read the Book Ezekiel.
I'm glad you think you can explain all the Bible to anyone because many pastors don't think they can (We'll unless they're the Pope )
1 Corinthians 13 11 When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known.---NASB
Tony, while the Rockefeller family are much better than the Kennedy family to use as examples, still even John D. Sr. believed works were a part of salvation, something he picked up from his mother, apparently.
I Read In The Chicago Tribune Today That Even The "VILLAGE PEOPLE", The "Rock & Roll" Group Whose Popularized 1978 Song 'YMCA' Is Well-Known In THIS GENERATION, Has Spoken AGAINST The Y.M.C.A. Changing Its Name To Just The "Y"--As They Themselves Asked "WHY ('Y')" !
One Of The Earliest Financiers Of THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION Was None Other That JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER--AN OLD FUNDAMENTALIST BAPTIST & MULTI-MILLIONAIRE OF HIS DAY WHO FOUNDED THE STANDARD OIL CO. !
HIS SONS; NELSON ROCKEFELLER, WHO WAS VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A. UNDER THE GERALD FORD ADMINISTRATION (1974-76) & DAVID ROCKEFELLER, WHO HEADS THE CHASE MANHATTAN BANKING & GLOBALIST MONETARY SYSTEM: NEVER DID FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THEIR FATHER JOHN D....
WHO FINANCED MANY PROTESTANT FUNDAMENTALIST INITIATIVES & THE U.S. NATIONAL EVANGELIST BILLY SUNDAY--NOT TO MENTION THE Y.M.C.A. !
THE ROCKEFELLERS ALSO FINANCED & PROMOTED THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO: WHICH STARTED AS A FUNDAMENTALIST & BIBLICAL LITERALIST SCHOOL OF HIGHER LEARNING !
SADLY, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO HAS GONE THE APOSTATE WAY OF HARVARD, DARTMOUTH & YALE UNIVERSITIES--
RIGHT BEHIND THE "LIBERAL" U Of C, AS FAR AS TEXTUAL-CRITICISM GOES, ARE BOB JONES UNIVERSITY, MOODY BIBLE INSTITUTE & THE BIBLE INSTITUTE OF LOS ANGELES !
What "Basic English?" Never heard of it in any formal sense.
Lev. 19:20 is not really a "hard case," as you're appealing to an unstated & unargued ethical principle that children shouldn't learn or know about human reproduction. Surely American cultural mores cannot overrule Paul's assertion that *all* Scripture is profitable for instruction, not merely the G-rated bits. Should we think that some of God's Word is unfit for children to hear uncensored?
Besides, some adults (say, ex-Catholics who internalized their church's official teachings about sex) might also be confused or offended talking about this verse, so perhaps they should be excused from the sermon as well? You cannot logically confine your argument to children.
Neil, has to expect adults to be able to understand a Bible in good contemporary English, they shouldn't have to have to use the Bible in Basic English as an example.
There are examples where a pastor may be pointing something in the Old Testament, does he have to cover up the meaning of Leviticus 19:20, The pastor should be able to get right to the point without the parents explaining some details about human relations before they were planning to.
But, yes, the parents are responsible for their children, both their physical and spiritual well-being.
Jessica, thankfully, we had Sunday School at the Methodist Church I was raised in, because especially in the early years, the Sunday School was more Christian than Methodist ministers, and in later years no more Christian than Methodist ministers, but at least more interesting.
I would also agree about so-called Christian radio, q.v., they are just part of Division and Diversion with Christians.

I am not offended by quotations in news reporting from the pope - the antichrist papacy is prophesied in scripture. I am offended by radio stations that make a pretense of gospel preaching and then ENDORSE the papacy as wise.
I do not expect you to understand the difference and will not reply further.
Rick wrote: The point is, here is an organization that uses the name Christian and is censoring christian activity.
Most people I know have a nominal Christian name but I do not expect Christian conduct from them. The YMCA is only nominally Christian. Neil drew out other victorian relics.
That said some of the social programs of the YMCA are excellent and praiseworthy in and of themselves.
I suggest you adjust your expectations. Personally, I find it hard to be offended by the secularism of the YMCA. Evangelical Christian radio supporting the pope - now that is offensive, together with much of the rest of the programming.
Guinness wrote: Have you considered that the offended people might be Christians?
No, there was actualy no one offended at all by the station. It was the secular mentality of the management that was afraid of someone being offended. The point is, here is an organization that uses the name Christian and is censoring christian activity. Of course if you had been there there would be no explaination needed.
Guinness wrote: Have you considered that the offended people might be Christians? Much of what passes as Christian radio is offensive to Christians. e.g. unnecessary and inappropriate "wise words from Pope" editorial comments coming up straight after syndicated news bulletins that factually reported the lastest banal pronouncements from the papacy.
