Internet porn a wide-ranging problem, even in the church
Long before the surgeon general issued his 1964 report showing the devastating harm of smoking, much of the nation viewed cigarettes as fun and harmless, even cool.
A new report says much of America today has a similar naive attitude toward Internet pornography and that it needs to wake up and see porn's destructive impact not only on individuals but also marriages, children and society in general -- before it's too late.
The 53-page report, called simply, "The Social Costs of Pornography," was released by The Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, N.J., and was signed by more than 50 scholars from a wide variety of backgrounds: conservatives and liberals, Democrats and Republicans, atheists and Christians....
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The net is good for a lot of things, but for someone like myself it is akin to having to work in a liqour store if one was an alcoholic. I legitimately use the internets for work, news, entertainment, and even good things like sermonaudio, but like that alcoholic stocking the shelves at the package store... I would also say this...without trying to be dirty or funny...for most men, and nowadays some women, it would be a struggle to keep the lust in check even if there were no internet. The internet just makes it easier. It's another sin that we have to pray about and struggle with our whole lives. We are fortunate that as Christians we don't have to go it alone like non-beleivers do.
Lust is rot to the mind and to the soul, I have been told that pornography effects the way a person sees others.
Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Proverbs 6:23-26 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.
Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Its a problem to the non-elect, and will not go away. They do not bring it into the church. They bring it into themselves, and carry themselves with it into a church.. Once when it gets in your head, it never comes out.. For it be glued on your memory..
We as Christians need to respond Biblicly to this problem. Not with surprise; because yes christians, pastors, and even women can be, and are caught up in it. Not with denial; by sweeping it under the rug and pretending it doesn't exist. Not with disdain; through treating people like lepers. And not with false tolerence; by thinking it's not that big a deal. It is a big deal. Poeple who were exposeed to pornography in the 60s and 70s still deal with the effects of it. Young people who get exposed to it now are going to be even worse off. Through love, prayer, wisdom and couseling, people need help. For the love of everything holy and good in this world, please, SermonAudio, stop posting these sales spam articles. I was looking for a link to this report, and finally saw: "The Social Costs of Pornography is available at Amazon.com ($5, not including shipping.)" If the report is not online and you can't download it, there's no point in running a "news story" that's just a sales pitch for it. Please, please stop posting these "news articles" that are just selling books!
