Oral Roberts, the evangelist who rose from humble tent revivals to found a multimillion-dollar ministry and a university bearing his name, died Tuesday. He was 91.
Roberts died of complications from pneumonia in Newport Beach, Calif., according to his spokesman, A. Larry Ross. The evangelist was hospitalized after a fall on Saturday. He had survived two heart attacks in the 1990s and a broken hip in 2006.
Roberts was a pioneer on two fronts — he helped bring spirit-filled charismatic Christianity into the mainstream and took his trademark revivals to television, a new frontier for religion....
Interacting with the congregations in Tulsa which enact the teachings of Oral Roberts, we find that they do not entertain the seed which is the Word of God, but money only. Tulsa has many churches which network and keep that doctrine: some chant "Money cometh to me now"; other stripes are staunch pro-Israel, pro-military and law enforcement. The one time I was in the same building as Oral Roberts, the people walked up to the altar as if giving to Jesus Christ's treasury: I gave a paper that read "TULSA, VATICAN, JERUSALEM." One time I kept testimony with Bill Daugherty (who died a couple weeks ago): his only answer to me? "Speak here with my lawyer".
