Teens swap cigarettes for pot

moking marijuana is becoming even more popular among U.S. teens and they have cut down on smoking cigarettes, binge drinking and using methamphetamine, according to a federal survey released Monday.

More teens also are getting high on prescription pain pills and attention-deficit drugs, according to eighth, 10th and 12th graders surveyed by the University of Michigan for the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

On one hand, authorities insist on widely prescribing psychotropic medications like methylphenidate (Ritalin) to children with real or imagined behavioral problems, while on the other, youth are told "Hugs, not Drugs."

The only difference is, Ritalin suits the purposes of authority figures, while crack or pot do not.

In most PSA's (Public Service Announcements) and Addiction Documentaries or news stories, the same remark is made by kids adn teens:

"It is EASIER to buy illegal drugs or prescription medication like Adderall or Oxycontin from friends/neighbors than it is to purchase cigarettes or alcohol at a convenience store."

What I notice is more common (this is relative to what I read and watch, of course) is that kids pick up these habits from their own parents. Sometimes it is the parent that GIVES the kids their first 'drink' or their first hit of say, METH or POT.
