Students display knowledge at first National Bible Bee
Under the bright stage lights, Daniel Staddon, 18, a home-schooler from Salem, W.Va., squeezed his eyes shut as he recited verse after verse from the Bible at the inaugural National Bible Bee.
He recited the first 20 verses of the fifth chapter of Ephesians and the 21 verses of Psalm 145 in the tie-breaker round, winning first place and a $100,000 prize.
"Dad suggested closing my eyes," said Staddon, adding that his seven siblings helped him study for months for the contest that ended last week at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in the District....
Reading more about this National Bible Bee, has some disturbing aspects to it. It appears many of the children had a lust for money and it was big money for the winners, some other reward needs to given and/or a lot less money!
1 Timothy 6 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang. 11 But flee from these things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.---NASB

I'm glad to see that the students could pick from 5 different versions of the Bible to do their competition, very good, I would assume that perhaps the winner used one with a lot of dynamic equivalence such as the NKJV? Admittedly it would be easier to memorize from than the excellent ... NASB
