WASHINGTON – Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.
Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell's victory in the Virginia governor's race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie's ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Maine voted on whether to affirm a state law that would allow same-sex couples to wed. If supporters prevail, it would mark the first time that the electorate in any state endorsed gay marriage.

He lost because the RINO republican Democrat wannabe, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual "rights" candidate withdrew and backed the Democrat just before the election, thus splitting Republicans. (Showing her true colors in the process) I feel that if the losing Conservative Party candidate had got into the fray earlier, he might well have won. The sad part is the Republican bigwigs selected and supported the RINO Scozzafava, in spite of her leftist leanings, instead of the Conservative Hoffman who reflects rural Northern NY values better. All she did was what they should have expected, if they weren't so thick. Don't be surprised if she switches to the Democrat party next.
GOP means "Grand Old Party." While today, it is broadly thought to be conservative, it was considered radical when it was founded - for opposing slavery. Only recently have Repub candidates succeeded in winning Southern precincts, & African-Americans tended to vote Repub until the Depression. But I suppose it has *always* had a tendency to support high finance & industry. That was characteristic of its antebellum ancestor party, the Whigs, as well.
Nothing to apologize for, Cliff, since (I presume) you're Irish. And many Americans don't seem to know, either: What does 'GOP' Stand For?

I just hope they come up with a REAL contender this time? McCain had a problem with personality, or at least he would have if he had one.
