AUSTIN ‚ÄĒ In a rare rejection of an appointment by the Texas governor, the Senate Thursday ousted Don McLeroy as chairman of the State Board of Education, with his supporters claiming the Bryan dentist was the victim of his strong religious beliefs.
McLeroy is a devout Christian who believes in creationism and the notion that the Earth is about 6,000 years old. He has steadfastly argued that Texas students should be taught the weaknesses of evolution.
His opponents portrayed him as ‚Äúa decent human being‚ÄĚ lacking leadership skills to chair the board divided between social conservatives and others. He will remain a member of the board....
Not knowing if Mr. McLeroy is one of many but may we be encouraged by this report and be prepared to make a stand for our faith in every sphere where our God has planted us. Ironic that in the good old USA one could be terminated from employment for neglecting to even read from the Bible in the public school system.
During the Scopes Monkey trial of 1925 Clarence Darrow stated that it is the height of bigotry to teach only one theory of origins(Divine Creation) in the public schools. Now it seems that the bigotry is on the other foot because only the Theory Of Evolution can be taught in the public schools.
