Southern Baptists' Top Ethicist Calls Waterboarding 'Torture'
Southern Baptist ethicist Richard Land, a leading Christian conservative who helped advance the Bush administration's agenda on a range of social issues, said Monday that the formerly sanctioned practice of waterboarding of suspected terrorists is torture and "violates everything we stand for."

Land, who is president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, repudiated the simulated drowning techniques in an interview with Religion News Service.

I think you're right. "torturing" of some form or another probably won't be employed until after the Terrorists hit us again.

Neil's point is well taken but I heard somewhere that Bin Ladin himself (a Saudi) wanted to use his own forces to kick Sadam Hussein out of Quait, which would no doubt have increased his influence in that region even earlier, I suspect. I wish we could stay away from that "neighborhood", but there's just too much there that we love (oil, Israel, strategic proximity to Russia and China, etc.).

We have tried the sabre rattling hard handed tactics for the last 8 years. I say it's time for a little diplomacy. If that doesn't work than we can always get on the bucket and start torturing again!!!

It was we who decided to loiter in the bullies' turf (the Mideast), protecting Sharia Law bullies (Kuwait, Saudi) from other bullies (Iraq & now Iran).

I don't know about you all, but I stay away from bad neighborhoods.

Well, I sure hope the terrorists debate among themselves what is and what is not torture. The punishment for most "non-believers" is to remove their heads from their shoulders. I guess a little decapitation or wide spread bombing is fine, but when we catch these murderers we'll slap on the handcuffs--not too tight now--and ask "pretty please with a cherry on top" that they reveal information about future attacks that they may know about. I'm sure they will comply as their way of thanking us for not torturing them. Way to go Obamatons! Let's sing Zippidy Doo Dah together!
LOL

Our terrorist adversaries must think we in the west are a bunch of colossal wussies, the way we agonize over what is and what is not "torture", and wonder how we ever rose to world domination in the first place (actually, our much-tougher predecessors accomplished that).

I learned long ago (in "playground 101") that it was the sensitive wussie that ALWAYS got harrassed by everyone else. I know it's a bit of an extrapolation but I suspect the bullies of the world will continue to harass us until we find a desire and a way to get tougher with them.

Ethicist, maybe, but he ought to read some history if he think psychological coercion is torture. By historical standards (even our own) it is not. Is the ethicist a post-modernist? (I don't know anything about him.)
