Archbishops hold Canterbury summit over threat of schism
Anglican archbishops will hold an emergency meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury today to discuss the unfolding schism in the Church in America.
The meeting between Dr Rowan Williams and the primates of Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and the Southern Cone comes two days after conservatives in the US unveiled the constitution and canons of the new Anglican Church in North America.
With a membership of 100,000, drawn from disaffected members of the Episcopal Church of the US and from churches that broke away over the women’s ordination dispute, leaders of the new “province” claim they are not splitting from the 75 million-strong Anglican Communion....
I do not know how the Anglican church works, but can't Rowan Williams be impeached, recalled, voted out, or something? It seems like he is at the center of any nonsense coming out of their church. Why is he still in office? Does he have lifetime tenure or something?
Surely this summit will be centered on the 39 articles, with the current church practices evaluated in light of what these articles and scripture says. After all, the articles are the foundation of Anglican belief and quite solid. Anyone who does not agree to them ought to leave the Anglican church, or if no one agrees to them they should publicly repudiate them and let those who agree start a doctrinally sound church.
Those who desire to stay faithful to the Scriptures need some space in which to practice their faith. Had Rowan and his fellow bishops remained true to the Scriptures, this would not happen or perhaps the liberals would leave. Therefore, the new Anglican Church in North America gets my support.
"Anglican archbishops will hold an emergency meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury today to discuss the unfolding schism in the Church in America."
Rowan has an impossible problem on his hands. The obvious direction for the Anglicans is to split. Liberal, hsl and women vicar Anglicans in one denomination.
Evangelicals in the other.
