Vatican defends Pope Pius' decisions during the Holocaust

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican stepped up its defense of Pope Pius XII on Tuesday, countering allegations the wartime pontiff was silent about the Holocaust by saying he saved Jews through his prudent diplomacy.
The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano dedicated an entire page to praising Pius, including an impassioned tribute from the Holy See's secretary of state, Italian Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
"It was precisely by means of a prudent approach that Pius XII protected Jews and refugees," Bertone wrote in an introduction to a book by a nun about the late pontiff....
I don't know, GG, what wikipedia article are you talking about? I said the one about PP XII was slanted in PP XII's favor. Ah, by the way, how could things have been made worse for the Jews? They were being killed on an assembly line basis. Did Bonhoeffer make things better, no, in fact as a Christian he may have done the wrong actions, and it would have been better if he had left Germany when had the chance. The German Lutheran Church's involvement in governments has in its own way have been just as disastrous as the Catholic Church's. Anyway, the archives of the Vatican have to be opened on PP XII's years and show how encouraged individual priests, cardinals, etc. to protect Jews, and still, The Scandal of the Catholic Priesthood.

Of course Pius XII was no "Bonhoeffer", Pius had the weight of World-wide Catholicism, War-time Europe and the fate of the Jews on his mind. Bonhoeffer was a German pastor. The say that Pius XII didn't act is a falsehood. The Jewish Congress requested that he not provoke the Germans into more persecutions. Read the comments of A. Einstein, Golda Meir, and other Jewish leaders of the period.

The first article says nothing about the pope or the Vatican.
The second article relies on John Cornwell's Hitler's Pope for its information, and as I've pointed out before, Cornwell has now retracted what he wrote in that book. It's time Professor Noble removed his article from the internet.
